About the Author
Hi! I am Richard Shepherd a 53 year old South Australian. This is my first book which has taken almost 10 years to write. My Interest in opal was sparked when I was a teen going to school. The explanation of opal formation in science class simply did not make sense. It was from this moment that I decided to do my own research and discover the real truth about opal origins. My research continued on and off all these years, culminating in this book. "The Birth of Opal" reveals both the natural and synthetic processes of opal genesis. It also covers the controversial "Len Cram" method revealing his secret electrolyte. I plan to use the finance raised by "The Birth of Opal" to change careers entering the field of Invention with the goal of producing Green Technology to help save the world, by reducing Global warming. Man reaches midlife, gets divorce, finds a new wife, and decides to build a house in the country. While the plot is familiar, the writing raises this above the level of most other "country home" chronicles. Manning, a freelance writer whose expose of timber industry practices ( Last Stand , LJ 10/1/91) cost him his newspaper job, put extensive research into his effort to produce a home in Montana that was both comfortable and relatively uninvasive to nature. Throughout the book, the reader is treated to Manning's inner musings: observations about how social pressures and material availability have affected construction methods throughout history, plumbing as a micromodel of the earth's water cycle, and cabinetwork as the neurosurgery of carpentry. The final chapter on sources contains a short, annotated list of current materials useful in planning a comfortable and environmentally friendly home. More about homebuilding than country life, this is good information for the "planning-your-dream-home" crowd.

Journalist Manning, whose Last Stand (not reviewed) was an expos‚ of the logging industry, now turns to the story of his decision to put his conservationist principles into action by building--largely with his own hands--a house that embodied the values he's espoused in his writing. We see the process literally from the ground up--anyone who wonders how a house is put together will learn a great deal here- -since Manning is fascinated by the complexities of carpentry, wiring, and plumbing, and the skills of those who do these necessary tasks. Each stage of the construction gets a separate chapter, covering not only the physical process of construction, but its history and its relationship to the ecological and conservational issues that are the author's real subject: where the lumber comes from, how hydroelectric dams affect wildlife, how much water is lost with every flush of a toilet. ``Less is more'' becomes a central theme throughout as Manning shows alternative ways to build a house while keeping waste and energy consumption to a minimum. And he keeps the reader aware of how the house relates to the natural setting of which it is a part- -from the ground squirrels that raid his vegetable garden to the trees that feed his woodstove. Nor does he neglect the human element: nearly every chapter features a sympathetically drawn portrait of some member of his Montana community--be it dowser or banker or backhoe operator--who contributed in some way to the project. Manning combines the nuts-and-bolts concreteness of a how-to book with a lively sense of history and a genuine dedication to principle and self-reliance: this one has the potential to become a modern American classic. A good house; a good life

Having read Manning's "Grassland" I knew his elegant style. I could relate to his saga since my wife and I built our own house with much the same mission as the Mannings. We're now enjoying using about half the energy and a quarter of the water as the average house. I appreciated Manning's detailed description of the construction and his reasons for each amenity in the house. On evironmentalism, one paragraph of his is worth dozens of weighty books by conventional writers. I'd like to read anything by this author!

PS: As important as the passive solar details are, the main point of this book is the phylosophy behind wanting to build one's own house.

A good template for defining the good life

A thoughtful couple, knowing that we were planning to build our own house gave this book; it was a pleasure to read because the question "What is a good house?" leads to the question "What is a good life?" For the author this led to more searching questions - a house takes forests from mountains, coal from hills, life from the planet. As these are all major contradictions for those who value nature, the author set out to build his house in such a way as to ensure his happiness with minimum damage to the earth. Building a house is an environmentally destructive act which, multiplied millions of times, is responsible for the degradation of some of our best land. The threat is that unless we are careful we may live our lives in an unsustainable manner. On a fairly superficial level Manning set out to build an environmentally sensitive, energy efficient house but at a deeper level he wanted a house that would rebuild his life from a failed marriage. He did not want frugality to preclude beauty nor asceticism to preclude art. This meant that the land and the author had to cut a deal which is really what this book is all about - the factors that we have to consider, the trade-offs that we have to make and the process of reaching our decisions.
The first lesson that we can learn from Manning is that the land is our first teacher, something that really came home to him in his search for water. The second lesson we learn is about money and how the house loan business works. Because he and the owner of the adjacent property needed a bank loan to build, they planned only basic environmental goals such as a 30% reduction in water consumption compared with national averages, superefficient lights and appliances, recycling of gray water, joint ownership of some facilities, and granting open-space easements for wildlife. With a loan secured he was ready for the third lesson - locating the house. In his case "feel" played a major consideration, once he had settled on a south facing slope and the house footprint. He established a rule that the house would be no bigger than his city apartment, although it was small by national standards, so that he could do without an architect. His golden rule was "If I don't understand it, I don't do it."
Manning tells us how he started digging and his plans for earth sheltering - burying the lower part of the house to reduce heat loss and take advantage of the earth's insulation - a special advantage on a south facing slope with the house buried on three sides. This is another way of saying you live in the basement and take advantage of a large area of the house. He decided on concrete rather than wood because of the concept of thermal mass. But concrete is a gamble; when it's done its either right for all time or its wrong. There's no middle ground. When it goes wrong, it goes dreadfully, terribly wrong and all hell breaks loose.
If you have ever toyed with the idea of building a house in the country and starting the good life, read this book with its template for defining the good life, defining the good house, proceeding with minimal resources and all its lessons for the unwary.

About the Author

Karen P. DePauw, PhD, is vice provost for graduate studies and dean of the graduate school at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. She has been involved with disability sport since 1981 and was on the original USOC Committee on Sports for the Disabled, on which she served for 12 years. She also served on the USOC Task Force on Disability and was a member of the Organizing Committee for the 1996 Paralympic Congress in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. DePauw has served as president of the International Federation on Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA). She is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); American College of Sports Medicine; National Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (NAPEHE); National Consortium on Physical Education and Recreation for Handicapped (NCPERH); and North American Federation for Adapted Physical Activity. She also serves on the editorial board of Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly. Dr. DePauw enjoys playing golf, cycling, and traveling in her spare time.

Susan J. Gavron, PED, is associate professor emeritus at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. She has had a lifelong involvement with people and disabilities in a variety of program formats, including teaching, camping, and sport.
Dr. Gavron has been involved in research of elite athletes with disabilities at the national and international levels. She participated in the research advisory group for the USOC Committee on Sports for the Disabled. She also has extensive programming experience in physical education and leisure for individuals with disabilities. She has received numerous awards for her work and service to the state of Ohio. Recently retired, Dr. Gavron is a firefighter and first responder and enjoys photography, fishing, and reading in her leisure time.

Much better than Origin A.R.S

I love these books. Normally I don't go for erotica and all that but when I saw that he was a demi-human summoner I had to go for it and I don't regret it. The idea of a protagonist who isn't all that dangerous on his own but bestows incredibly powerful perks on his party and allows for unbelievable levels of coordination is such an underused but awesome idea. Nothing really new gets introduced in this book but considering the length that's no surprise. On that note these are entirely too short. Just when things start to get get good, lolbooksdonesorry. That would be the only issue with these I'd say. It's pretty much impossible to dislike any of the characters despite their INCREDIBLE libidos thanks to the fact that they're remarkably well written and complex even though the book is half erotica half litrpg. As for Scott himself, well unlike most protagonists he's intelligent, witty and isn't prone to fits of uncontrollable assholery as is the norm these days for whatever reason. To Mr. Futch, please sir, make the next book longer, and in my personal opinion this series is far better than Origin ARS and you should totally disregard that one and focus on this one. In all seriousness please make the next one longer.

Repetitive sex -- blah...

I'll synopsize the 6 episodes (to date) rather than wasting my time (and yours)...

In general, the writing style is okay -- easy to read and relatively engaging at times. Unfortunately, there are far too many typos, especially for the minimal lengths of each episode.

Episode length -- plenty of comments saying they're "too short". Truth -- the episodes aren't long enough to develop the story.
Author -- give yourself a chance. Extend your episodes to 100+ pages, perhaps charge $1.99 -- novella length, enough room to develop a sub-plot or two.

Sex -- too much, too repetitive. "50 Shades of Grey" with perhaps a sheep, goat, and horse thrown in does it much better. It's entirely "washed over" the story -- in some episodes, there's nothing else. It's also a bit too much "Internet Porno", about as "not real" as it gets...
Get back to the story, and treat "sex" as the sideline it is. Use it to enhance, not overwhelm...

Story -- started out okay, got washed out by the B.S. Lot's of "2 star-minus" episodes.
The Main Character should be intent on raising his Stats, developing firmer goals, and obtaining/developing his "harem". I'd think that each of his harem members has a "Skill Tree" , yet I've read little or nothing about them.

This storyline is one of two in the author's "Universe". The concepts are interesting, but the execution, to-this-point, has been questionable. It's time to set the porno/beastiality "kink" aside, and fill out the story.
If this were "a book", then the conclusion of the first book should be at the "Beta Test" conclusion point. That point is drawing near, yet there's been little beyond obtaining sex partners. If you (the author) wants readers, give them something to actually read being boring, repetitive sex...

Way too short...

I'm giving this book only 3 stars because it's so very very short. I really love the Freelance Saga, but considering the time between each book and how extremely short they are I can't give it the 4 - 5 stars it otherwise deserves. I would recommnend to anyone thinking of starting this series to wait until it's done before buying. It's very aggravating when you have such a potentially great series, but you have to wait such a long time for such extremely short installments.

About the Author
Stephen Karam is the author of Sons of the Prophet, a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and the recipient of the 2012 Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and Hull-Warriner Awards for Best Play. Other plays include Speech & Debate, the inaugural production of Roundabout Underground; columbinus (New York Theatre Workshop); and the libretto for Dark Sisters, an original chamber opera with composer Nico Muhly. Stephen is a MacDowell Colony fellow and the recipient of the inaugural Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Drama Desk Award. He teaches graduate playwriting at The New School. He grew up in Scranton, PA and is a graduate of Brown University.

A Classic of Modern Theatre

I read the play after having scene the Broadway staging. So I can't review it just as something I have read. That being said, this is an amazing play. The pathos and the quiet fury sneak up on you, hidden at first under the familiar quips of a typical family with its stories, in jokes, and knowing jabs at one another.

Eventually the jabs have teeth, and what seems like a subtle little family at Thanksgiving comedy turns into something different. There is a little bit of a gimmick, not a twist, but a theme that is hit maybe a little harder than needed, but it works. This is a play that leaves the audience or the reader thinking about it long after the curtain has fallen. It is a remarkable work.

Beautiful!

Just a beautiful piece of writing. Snuck up on me - at the start, I though, what's all the fuss about? But the characters are subtly and gradually revealed to each be deep and nuanced, fully-fleshed out human beings. Flawed and in pain and hurting the ones they love even as they lean on them. The rhythms of the dialogue are so well-wrought, they serve the piece instead of taking it over. It's funny and sad and left me with my jaw on the floor at times. Will read it again, and recommend it highly.

Must-have for comics historians and knowledgeable comics readers

This outstanding history of American comic books not only uses American history to understand comics, it uses comics to understand American history. The well-written survey carefully and humorously takes the reader through the 20th and into the 21st Centuries, exploring each comic book's heroes, plots, and cultural significance. Each section is thoughtful and shows not only an historian's meticulous eye for analysis, but also a comic-book lover's enthusiasm. A deeply interesting look at how comic books both reflect and affect popular culture. Very suitable both for students and for pleasure reading. --Donna Knaff

My contempory Spanish lit class at Vanderbilt read this play, and I thought it was a truly masterful piece of work. Aside from the contemporary political themes touched upon, this play also serves as a marvelously crafted religious alegory; Ignatius serves as a strong Christ-figure, and is just as persistent in his mission to point out the foly and blindness of others who will not accept it. En la ardiente oscuridad" adresses a universal theme, our "sentimiento tragico de la vida," to use Unamuno's phrase. This play is for anyone who is tempted to deny his or her own blindness; it is also for anyone who struggles daily with the conflict between comfort and truth; it is also for those who love the teachings of Christand his quest to reveal spiritual blindness wherever he found it. Read this play.

The Burning Darkness

I'm reading this play (in Spanish) in my Pre-AP Spanish class. It's really quite moving, and I think that it's easy to read as long as you've taken at least three years of high school Spanish or Spanish is your first language. Unfortunately, I don't know how good the translation is, but the original is extremely powerful. I'd definitely recommend the play for older readers.
