This is another interesting work by Douglas Baker. In it are a couple of concepts that i hadn't encountered before, and that hence enriched my knowledge on the subject. Said this, I found this book missing bits and pieces, and stylistically poorly executed.
Baker here continually refers to other works by him (in particular 'the Jewel in the Lotus'), forcing the reader to move on to that work and to make too many mental notes. This makes me assume that it would have perhaps been a more appropriate task to integrate the two books, for a clearer understanding of the topics presented. Ultimately i found section IV fruitless, where instead i would have loved to learn more techniques. Said techniques are definitely available from other sources: even just recalling basic exercises found in the occult tradition and taught by writers such as the learned Jean Dubuis, would prove invaluable to readers interested in a more in depth approach to meditation. On this line, i found Baker's 'Esoteric Anatomy' books to be more insightful than this reviewed work.

A Curious (But Not Cosmic) Collection

“The subject of this book is the fate of civilizations, defined by seas: the shift of initiative from the China Seas and the Mediterranean, the hegemony of the Atlantic, the cultural counter-invasion from the Pacific”. To look at his subject from a novel angle Felipe Fernandez-Armesto envisions a “galactic museum of the distant future, in which…Coke cans will share with…chain mail a single small vitrine marked ‘Planet Earth, 1000-2000, Christian Era’.” So far, so good. The author deserves high marks for originality (this work predates the recent spate of “A History of X in Y Objects’ books) as he does for his erudition. Furthermore it is largely devoid of those annoying little factual inaccuracies that litter so many of the books I’ve reviewed.
It begins promisingly with a review of the relatively discrete civilizations of 1000AD. But it is as we start to approach the ‘Rise of the West’ that, to my mind, the wheels start to come off and never get put back on again for the rest of the book.
We are told that, “The fourteenth-century experience…made western Europe in the fifteenth-century the least promising of the world’s civilizations and, to objective scrutiny, among the worst equipped to profit from the world’s ‘age of expansion’, which began with initiatives weighted in favour of China and Islam and...with states of greater dynamism in Africa and the Americas than any visible in the Latin West.” And that, “Fifteenth-century Europe…will appear, to the galactic museum-keepers…if the notice it at all, stagnant and introspective.”
Now Felipe Fernandez-Armesto is both an author and a graduate of – and later a fellow at – the oldest university in the English-speaking world. The fifteenth century Latin West, which in earlier centuries had given birth to the university (as opposed to a cathedral school or a madrassa), saw an explosion in the number of universities and also the invention of the printing press with moveable metal type.
Consider our cosmic curator. Presumably it travels by spaceship or is at least descended from more primitive beings that still had to travel by such a machine.
To travel through space it helps if you have a machine with which to do so, an instruction system that tells you how to run it, devices for measuring time and space – however relative they may be – and a means of magnifying far away objects.
While it might have marvelled at the ingenuity of the water-powered devices built by Su Sung and Al Jazeri it might have noticed that these were one-offs and anyway not suitable for mechanization. From about 1300 onwards Medieval Latin Christendom was dotted with mechanical clocks in churches and town halls. The mechanical clock has been called the ‘mother of machines’. To this day our measure of how smoothly efficient a machine works is that it ‘runs like clockwork’. As Lewis Mumford put it in Technics and Civilization
“The clock is not merely a means of keeping track of the hours, but of synchronizing the actions of men. The clock, not the steam-engine, is the key-machine of the modern industrial age…In its relationship to determinable quantities of energy, to standardization, to automatic action, and … accurate timing, the clock has been the foremost machine in modern technics; and at each period it has remained in the lead: it marks a perfection toward which other machines aspire.”
From the 1450s onwards Medieval Latin Christendom was also dotted with printing presses with moveable type, the machine necessary to produce instruction manuals. But such printing press were ignored or, in the Islamic world, rejected outside of the West for centuries after their invention.
The fifteenth century Latin West also led the world in glass making (spectacles were another medieval western invention) that would lead on to the telescope, the microscope and also those tubes and beakers without which chemistry would be well-nigh impossible.
To my mind from then on the book never really recovers. Near the end we are told that, “Over the period as a whole, the east may well seem to have been more influential in the west than the other way around.”
Seriously?
A thousand years ago the West lagged behind the Eat in general and China in particular in many ways. But things have changed a tad since then.
I think China, where Adam Smith seems to be taking over from Karl Marx, houses more Christians than the West does Confucians. The demonstrators in Tiananmen Square built their own Statue of Liberty. I don’t recall the Occupy movement invoking the Mandate of Heaven.
What population could Asia support today were it not for the work of the likes of Pasteur, Haber and Borlaug?
Having taken a wrong turning the book meanders on telling us more about the author’s highly impressive erudition than it does about how the world changed in the last millennium.
What we’re left with is more a cabinet of curiosities than a cosmic class collection.

He lives in Sutton, MA.

A Different Take On Rome, But Nothing Really New To Offer

Unlike many publications dealing with Roman history, Martin's take on the subject is not so much based on chronology and important figures as it is lifestyle. That is, trying to deliver some insight into how a person living in Rome (or, for that matter, its empire) thought, worked and spent. That aspect is interesting I suppose, but makes for stretches of deadly dull reading. I note that Mr. Martin spends a great deal of time on the introduction and expansion of Christianity, which would be fine except that much less space is devoted to the pagan/imperial religion which dominated the Roman world up until the time of Constantine.

I would have much preferred to gain more insight into the pre-Julian times, and more research into the "component" ethnic groups who, upon being merged with the base Latin city, went on to make the core of the expanding Roman Republic. Also lacking is any depth of information about the final fifty years of the independent remnant of the Roman Empire.

The word I would use to describe this work is "sketchy", and "OK" book that might leave the reader wanting to know more, since there is so much rich history of this long-lasting and important part of world culture.

Sketchy but decent info on Rome. I was expecting more.

Not bad if this is your first book about Roman history. Not good if you are interested in a new angle. I expected it to be more insightful or having some additional info or approach. I would liked to have the author's opinion on the major turning points of Rome.
Why was it so successful, why did it descent into chaos, why did it collapse eventually?

I am glad to have read this book

Dr. Martin offers here a generally plausible survey of Roman history from its inception to the early Byzantine era. His discussion of the religious background of the Roman world is sadly lacking in detail, even for a relatively short book such as this. The mystery religions are almost totally ignored and the author's presentation of the early Christian ecclesiastical structure as "loose" and "democratic" is frankly superficial. On a more positive note, the chapters on the collapse of the Republic and the Augustan principate were prudently written and admirably balanced. I am glad to have read this book, and would recommend it to fellow students of the ancient world.

Rome tipped my head back, staring at my lips. I had nowhere to duck before he was upon me, his lips meeting mine.

As if he flung me across the room and into the wall, my body jerked, struck with such an impossible force I thought I had collapsed into a seizure. Rome steadied me before I lost my balance and fell to the floor.

The closeness didn’t aid my dizziness. The room swirled and spun and left me so confused and terrified I clung to Rome as my last bastion of strength. He saved me before, he would save me again. Protect me from the overwhelming ache in every one of my muscles and the pulsing, uncompromising need infecting my veins.

Instinct.

I had no idea what it wanted, but suddenly it hit me. Like a lighthouse in my head, whatever instinct I possessed burned away the fog and led me to a realization so absurd and insane and natural that I nearly collapsed again.

“I’ve wanted to taste you since I first saw you,” Rome whispered. He pushed me back against the wall, held me up. “Do you understand now? Do you see why I have to do what I’m going to do?”

I couldn’t breathe. I needed him for air. I grabbed at him, sinking my nails into his shoulders to pull him back to me. He kissed me again, parting my lips and nibbling at me.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart. I’m so sorry.”

I didn’t think he needed to apologize. I kissed him just as hard. He groaned against my lips. His body pushed against mine and pinning me to the wall.

“You deserve better than this,” he hissed.

“Better than what?”

“Better than me.”

His tongue slipped past my lips. I groaned, welcoming the light touch against mine.

“What’s happening?” I murmured.

“The demon.” Rome pushed my head back and dove for my neck, sucking just above the artery, where he could feel the blood pulsing. “I can’t stop it, and I’m so sorry.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m going to mount you.”

So kinky and HOT!!!

I loved this book. I'm not usually one to leave reviews but I so very much enjoy this author and her story that I want to make sure that other readers find it and enjoy it as much. I understand is not for every palate. But among the few ones out there with this specific type of paranormal erotica/romance is one of the best! If you have read "Bating the beast" by Eva Lore, 'The Wolf's Girl' by Elinora Lupin, 'Knotty Encounters' by Layla Lewis, you will enjoy this one as well. It's well written, great characters, hot, hot, hot sex scenes and a story that leaves you craving more. I'm definitely rooting for this couple. Can't wait to read the next book and see them get their HEA. Maybe with a small litter eventually... ;) I'm adding it to my fave kinky collection. Please hurry with the next book of the series.

Eva Hesse (1936–1970) is known for her sculptures that made innovative use of industrial and everyday materials. Her diaries and journals, which she kept for the entirety of her life, convey her anxieties, her feelings about family and friends, her quest to be an artist, and the complexities of living in the world.
 
Hesse’s biography is well known: her family fled Nazi Germany, her mother committed suicide when Hesse was ten years old, her marriage ended in divorce, and she died at the age of thirty-four from a brain tumor. The diaries featured in this publication begin in 1955 and describe Hesse's time at Yale University, followed by a sojourn in Germany with her husband, Tom Doyle, and her return to New York and a circle of friends that included Sol LeWitt, Mel Bochner, Lucy Lippard, Robert Mangold and Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Robert Ryman, Mike Todd, and Paul Thek.  
 
Poignant, personal, and full of emotion, these diaries convey Hesse’s struggle with the quotidian while striving to become an artist.

Not much here to read. Eva never meant for ...

Not much here to read. Eva never meant for anyone to read her diaries, and it shows. Incomplete sentences, large gaps, no real cohesive narrative anywhere to be found. Not worth the time. If you want to know more about Eva's art and her processes, read Art Talk, by Cindy Nemser.

Archimandrite Job Getcha holds a doctorate in theology. Formerly Dean of the Institut Saint-Serge in Paris, and professor there of liturgy and church history, Senior Scholar at the Institut Catholique de Paris, Fr Job is on the faculty at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Orthodox Theology at the Orthodox Center of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Chambesy, Switzerland.

Paul Meyendorff is the Fr Alexander Schmemann Professor of Liturgical Theology at St Vladimir s Orthodox Theological Seminary, author of The Anointing of the Sick, and the Editor of this series.
