A good path to curriculum design

If you are an academic administrator and you have to participate in the curriculum design of undergraduate and even graduate programs, then this book can be very helpful before starting the process. It's the 2009 second edition so it's very up-to-date, and the ideas can be useful not only in US but worldwide.

Yawn!

This book has managed to make an already dry subject (curricular development) even drier. The language is simple and easy to read, which is a plus, but the chapters are often 40 pages long and drag on endlessly. Given the subject (which is what I am primarily basing my review on), Lattuca & Stark do a fine job.

If you're interested in curricular development, I'm sure this is a great place to start. If you're not interested in it, however, this book will NOT pique any interest.

Better than I thought it would be

This book was required reading for a graduate course that I am taking. There is some useful information, but, as usual with this genre of book, too much "educationist" claptrap. I do admit that there is some information here that could be very useful for administrators, if they don't fall asleep while reading the rest of it!

It's a pretty tough book but I was ready for a community ...

I assume you are buying this because a music teacher requested that you do so, for yourself or a family member. It's a pretty tough book but I was ready for a community orchestra experience by the time I got through it. Lots of position changes and some beautiful Renaissance music that was new to me. Hard but doable. Arrived in very good shape. Good luck!

Jung related to Zen & Vajrayana--a high quality gem

This is a terrific book. It has 3 parts: Jung's Commentaries on Tibetan Buddhist texts, his meeting with a Zen expert, & 9 articles by contemporary authors on Jung-Buddhist issues. It is bi-directional, addressing both Jung's contributions to Buddhism & vice versa. Some of the authors have published valuable books too-Radmila Moacanin, Nathan Katz, & Harold Coward. Jung said: p. 49: "Matter is an hypothesis. When you say `matter' you are really creating a symbol for something unknown, which may just as well be `spirit' or anything else; it may even be "God," p. 76: "close parallelism between the findings of Eastern & Western psychology," & p. 83: "The Bardo Thödol is in the highest degree psychological in its outlook." The book addresses mostly Zen & Vajrayana Buddhism & Jung, though there is a bit on Freud too. Nathan Katz says: p. 324: in "Dakini & Anima..."-"a paradigm for comparative religion-psychological study which neither reduces one perspective to another, nor sees the discourses of Buddhist & Jungian psychology as rigidly & artificially compartmentalized." This relates to virtually the entire book. As James Thomas states: p. 221: "The language of both Jung & Buddhism is a study in elaborate avoidance of metaphysics. The language of both strives to be purely empirical."

The book also addresses Jung-Buddhist differences: p. 183: Mokusen Miyuki in "Self-Realization in the 10 Oxherding Pictures," "The Eastern concept of `mind' is radically different from that in the West." Quoting Jung, "In the West, `mind' is more or less equated with consciousness, whereas in the East the word `mind' is closer to what the West refers to as the unconscious...Our study, employing Jung's concepts & methodology, has afforded us a psychological understanding of Zen satori (enlightenment) in terms of self-realization, or the urge of the Self to realize itself." And since the U.S. is considered ESTJ (Extroverted/Sensate/Thinker/Judgmental) & Tibet seems opposite in psychological type & Westerners go down into the unconscious (& Kabbalists go down to the Chariot) while Easterners rise up to their Buddha nature, Jung suggested Westerners read the Bardo Thödol backwards. Also, p. 163: Thomas Kasulis, says "The Zen Buddhist view of the person goes beyond the more restricted psychoanalytic categories of Freud & Jung." Interestingly, the Pu-ming oxherding pictures remind me of the Tibetan Path of Shamatha in Kalu Rinpoche's "Luminous Mind" or Dzogchen Ponlop's stages of resting in "Wild Awakening." But the largest difference is in the view of the final stage of enlightenment vs. individuation-Self-centered vs. ego-centered people-whether the Self can be "conscious" without the ego. IMHO this is a matter of conceptual definitions-& it reminds me of Casteneda's 2nd Attention with which Jung was unfamiliar.

As yet, an unparalleled reference on the science of epidemiology

Masterly. Rothman and coworkers' 3rd edition of the classic `Modern Epidemiology' is a landmark step in presenting with cohesiveness and clarity traditional + cutting-edge concepts and methods for observational research (and by extension for experimental research on human subjects as well, since problems like unblinding or loss-to-follow-up may reintroduce bias in clinical trials after randomization, with a corresponding need for epidemiological interpretative and analytical tools).
This highly regarded volume has no equal, as it has been not only an authoritative source of information but `the' reference on epi methods for almost a quarter century. For those looking for an introductory level textbook, Rothman's one by Oxford University Press is highly recommended, since the comprehensive `Modern Epidemiology' requires some previous exposure to the concepts and biostatistical methods presented.
The 3rd edition is an encyclopedic effort, brings methodological coherence to a whole new level, is highly readable, and confirms itself as the standard reference on epidemiological and clinical research for many more years to come. An outstanding scholarly achievement.
Definitely a must-have for anyone who needs to learn and apply basic/advanced epidemiological methods rigorously in clinical as well as general population settings.

This is an excellent book (5 stars for content)

This is an excellent book (5 stars for content), but this edition, which is described as "Third Edition, Mid-cycle revision" and dated 2012 appears to be the exact same text as the 2008 Third Edition (3 stars for unclear product description). The only difference is that this product comes with online access to the e-book version and "additional resources". The only added resource I could find was errata - and this should be available to anyone who purchased the 2008 book anyway. The publisher should make this information clear so customers can make informed buying decisions.

excellent and very up-to-date

I am a social scientist, not an epidemiologist, and I found this book to exceptionally good. It is the most current, complete, and clear presentation of methods for causal inference for observational (i.e. non-experimental) studies that I have seen. The things that really set this book apart for me include:

1. It synthesizes contributions by Pearl and Rubin on the foundations of causal inference, and contributes its own perspective via the sufficient cause model. This is truly cutting edge, not to mention impeccably coherent.
2. The first third of the book is on study design, including measurement, sampling, and defining effects. This is just fantastic. Many methods textbooks jump right into approaches to analyzing data with little time taken to discuss how to make the data in the first place. This book provides a major corrective to that tendency.
3. In data analysis, a lot of attention is given to sparse data problems, which again is just great. So many textbooks overlook this problem, which is a huge omission.
4. The data analysis section includes discussion of up-and-coming data mining and non-parametric methods (e.g. BART, boosted regression, etc.) to characterize response surfaces in the service of causal inference. That's amazingly cutting edge for a textbook.
5. The meta-analysis section emphasizes simplicity and provides a very nice list of common errors that should be avoided.
6. The references are to state of the art literature not only in epidemiology, but also in econometrics, education research, and statistics. It's great to see such cross-fertilization across disciplines, and it shows how these various disciplines are converging, it seems, on common analytical tools for causal inference in observational studies.

There are lots of nice examples throughout the book too. For other social scientists out there, I highly recommend this as a primer on state of the art methods for carrying out observational studies.

Piercingly perceptive

Before reading this book of short stories, I knew practically nothing about Hughes, other than that he was famous for being one of the first black American writers to develop a style of writing which directly reflected the uniqueness of the Afro-American experience.
Reading this collection, however, introduced me for the first time to the mind of a truly great observer, thinker, and communicator. Hughes achieved something which is very important in the now overly politicized climate of race: he documented not only the confounding and hostile conditions which blacks had to endure in the early 20th century, but he understood the white culture as well. Through the eyes of the shrewd and empathetic Hughes, these stories read not so much as indictments of white racism as they do as the clashes of two dramatically different cultures.
To be sure, Hughes does not pull any punches when describing the hostility, condescension, and apathy of whites towards blacks during the Great Depression. These stories are glimpses into a world when overt racism was not only condoned, it was institutionalized as part of the American fabric. But despite the awful conditions for black people at the time, I never got the sense that Hughes was writing to express any personal rage or contempt for white people. He seems to present each heartbreaking scenario as an absurd juxtaposition between two disparate cultures. Instead of taking the easy road by presenting whites as evil, he makes them out to be a paranoid, anal retentive, soulless lot who don't know how to enjoy themselves. Unlike many contemporary discussions of race which tend to oversimplify the complex problems we face, Hughes's stories paint the clash between blacks and whites with deep humanity, empathy, nuance, and even humor.
Stylistically, he certainly belongs to the canon of outstanding 20th century American writers, black and white. He was no mere experimentalist (as I had previously thought), but rather a well schooled craftsman who did his homework first, and then did his own thing with it.
But aside from all my amateur literary criticm, I would like to mention that I simply could not put this book down. These stories are a gift!

Langston Gets Tough!!!!

The thing that has always bothered me about certain admirers of Langston Hughes is the way, unintentional I guess, some seem to neuter him into being a kind of "minstrel man,"nonthreating to a certain audience because he doesn't challenge them to think to much about certain subjects. THE WAYS WHITE FOLKS definitely disproves this fallacy and proved Langston Hughes could show his teeth.

Without ever standing on a soapbox to shout and point his a finger, here in this collection of short stories Hughes express a range of moods from humorous and bitingly caustic to the tragic showing the various types of ways black and white American interacted with one another during the early part of the 20th century. There is the perennial favorite "CORA UNASHAMED", dealing with a black woman's loneliness and self-awaking in a predominantly white community, SLAVE ON THE BLOCK, dealing with "liberal minded" white dilettantes, "HOME", about a sickly black man who returns home from Europe only to face brutal prejudice, "REJUVENATION THROUGH JOY", a biting satire
that may (?) have been taking a small swipe at Jean Toomer who Hughes lost much respect for after he turned his back to his people to live as white. Then there are the stories "THE BLUES I'M PLAYING" with its hints of Langston's former patron Mrs. Mason, "A GOOD JOB" and "POOR LITTLE FELLOW", all kind of showing the various choices, sacrifices, and prejudice faced in its varied degrees to just get by. And, more shorts where Hughes pretty much presents the entire skin color spectrum of the black American community while recounting in a few stories the often cruel ways these colors came to be, "RED-HEADED BABY" and "FATHER AND SON", this latter about an arrogant black son by a white southern father who refuses to acknowledge him as kin and the resulting tragic consequences. "PASSING", my lease favorite because it was very disturbing, is nevertheless truthful to the affects of racism and self-hate on the soul (e.g. just look at certain male and female actors and singers who cater to prejudiced imaginary percentage points of race for success).

Certain stories in this collection represent a time gone by in race relations in this country. But, while the situation in race relations have change quite significantly, it has not changed completely. There are stories in the WAYS OF WHITE FOLKS that still hold a relevant truth today as the first time they were made public. Still, there exist a widespread denial of the complicated blood history of the larger black American community, only a specific few within the community being allowed the privilege to acknowledge their heritage and, often out of self-hate, contributing to the prejudiced stereotypes against the larger black American community whose blood is "equally" rich and the "same" in its diversity. Still, there exist those little touchs of bigotry today that one has to smile away and pretend doesn't exist and hurt or be branded the angry black and thus difficult,AND the psychologically damaging effects of viewing favorably light skin blacks over dark skin blacks.

Langston Hughes was a skilled and astute observer and this is why much of his work continues to be popular and stand the test of time beyond simple entertainment value. THE WAYS OF WHITE FOLKS is definitely deserves and gets a 5 star rating!!!
