Keeps getting Better and Better!

You can't keep a good half-human down! This latest edition of the highlariously playable Nuisances has been playtested and expanded upon to give gamers more to groan about and DMs more to smile about, and vise versa! Nothing like an already tiny halfling with the Dwarfism defect (which grants and extra Feat choice as well) to really ankle bite and frustrate the legions of tall gnolls around the countryside!

Seriously- the first Nuisances book made me laugh until I cried and my stomach hurt so of course when I saw this extended version, I had to own it... The beautiful new design is awesome and the additions to the original material made buying this book worth every penny! This book is a lot of fun and anyone who likes d20 games needs to have it!

About the Author
Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) is the author of more than fifty books, including Night, his harrowing account of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. Night is a painful and harrowing story about the madness and the evil that darkened Europe during the Second World War. Elie's story begins in Transylvania in a small Jewish neighborhood where Elie and his family live, unknowingly, on the brink of terror.

Elie, his family, and community are captured, shuttled into railroad cars, and transported to Auschwitz, Nazi Germany's largest concentration camp. So quickly turns the fate of Elie and his family that they disbelieve their circumstances even as they witness people being conducted en masse to gas chambers and crematoriums. The weak are killed. The strong become industrial slaves, entitling them only to hope for another day and a slower death.

Elie survives Auschwitz and Buchenwald, outliving both his mother and his sister. But Elie still has his father. Sensitive and intuitive, he notices that many fathers die after losing their loved ones. Elie realizes that if he were to die, his father would soon follow. Elie tells himself that he must live in order to give his father hope for living.

Elie does eventually live to see his father die in an infirmary, emaciated, exhausted, beaten, spiritless, and vulnerable like a child.

While his father's health is still in decline, Elie daily brings half his ration of bread to him, but that would not save his father from the darkness. A German soldier beats the last bit of life out of his father while he lay prostrate on the edge of death. "Elie," his father exhaled with barely the strength to whisper his son's name as his last word. Elie, motionless, unable to utter the words in his throat, confronts the guilt of being unable to help his father. How could he allow the soldier to beat his dying father? Why was he too afraid to cry out to answer his father's call? So helpless against the growing darkness.

Elie is most vulnerable when contemplating a world without God where darkness prevails. How can we, he asks, witness thousands burned in crematoriums or children being shot, thrown into a pit, and buried without losing our belief in a loving God? How can God himself ignore such evil? Where can we find a place in such a world for the Torah, the Kabala, and belief?

Yet, in a world hostile to belief and hostile to life, Elie witnesses and shows us himself that hope and faith do still sprout up like grass through cracks in the sidewalk, or, more appropriately, like moonlight through cracks in the curtain. The Night is dark, but not pitch-black where yet lives one sensitive soul.

This is a must read - for everyone! A real, raw and riviting account of Ellie Wiesel's personal experience during the Holocaust. Starting when no one believed the pending danger of war... to the formation of ghettos and finally life in a concentration camp. His Nobel Peace Price Acceptance Speech at the end of the book is an important bonus! We must NEVER FORGET... Ellie's account will help.

GRIPPING!

What an emotional ride. I've been a Wiesel fan for a great many years and this book most assuredly did not disappoint. He had me from the opening page and I found it difficult to put down. Young and old alike need to read this Trilogy. I am certain, from speaking to many 20-somethings, that they cannot relate and find it difficult to believe that such things could ever happen. Wiesel gives you three different stories, all of which are clearly different with no relationship to the previous story, but then again, they DO relate. You won't be disappointed.

In a study of interest primarily to academics, Dalton, a professor of political science at Manhattan's Barnard College, describes how Gandhi's work in South Africa and India helped him develop the subtle relationship between swaraj (freedom as self-rule or self-control) and satyagraha (nonviolent force born of truth and love). The author elucidates the criticisms of Gandhi by such contemporaries as Rabindranath Tagore and M. N. Roy, pointing out that neither man found a way to connect freedom and power as Gandhi did in his 24-day protest march in 1930 against the British tax on salt in India, and in his 1947 fast in response to communal violence in Calcutta. Dalton offers an intriguing chapter comparing Gandhi, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., and suggests that while King embodied Gandhi's tactics and Malcolm X traveled a similar journey of personal emancipation, neither managed to combine both swaraj and satyagraha . Dalton concludes by reflecting how Gandhi's example proves that political life can include ideals and truth.

What a refreshing study of Gandhi's political thought! Void of the usual psychological mumbo jumbo, this book presents an intellectually satisfying analysis of the Gandhian concepts of satyagraha and swaraj , of their interconnection, and of their application in his quest for Indian independence. Tracing the origins of Gandhi's ideals in ancient Vedic texts and in the body of Western philosophy, Dalton (political science, Barnard) demonstrates Gandhi's first tentative use of satyagraha , the power of truth and love, in nonviolent protests in South Africa and then with increasing confidence in India in the 1930s. Here Gandhi linked satyagraha with swaraj , self-rule or self-restraint, to push forward his case against British Imperial rule. Dalton's focus on Gandhi's salt march of 1930 and his fast of 1946 in Calcutta illustrate with great clarity these principles. Although admiring Gandhi, Dalton eschews his canonization for a clear, thoughtful study, the best in recent years.

Worthy study of Gandhi (1869-1948) as a political and social leader, by longtime Gandhi scholar Dalton (Political Science/Barnard). According to the author, Gandhi built his revolutionary platform on two moral principles. One was swaraj, meaning ``freedom''--not in the modern American sense of unbridled choice but rather social and individual liberation achieved through ``discipline ruled from within.'' The other was satyagraha, or ``non-violent power.'' Here, too, Gandhi diverged from modern sensibilities, for satyagraha to him was more than passive resistance: It entailed active compassion, even love, for one's enemies. Although Gandhi later moderated some of his ideas--for instance, his wholesale rejection of modern civilization--Dalton makes it clear that the Mahatma's radical spiritual stance was the inexhaustible force that powered Indian resistance to British rule. Gandhi's greatest triumph was his march to the sea in 1930 protesting the infamous British salt tax, an event that Dalton describes in detail, as he does the spectacular Calcutta fast for peace during the 1947 Hindu-Moslem hostilities. Less well known, but also amply covered here, are the many harsh evaluations of Gandhi by fellow countrymen, most notably Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel-winning poet, who attacked the Mahatma for fostering nationalism rather than world peace. Revelatory, too, is Gandhi's own misstep in urging Jews to combat Hitler through satyagraha. Dalton concludes with a brief comparison of Gandhi, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr., and with a glance at Gandhi's lessons for posterity. The POWER of the Truth Force

I don't care to duplicate the academic praise seen in the above reviews. But I can tell you simply that Dennis Dalton was my professor in a class on Non-Violence at Columbia Univ. and it changed my life. At a period of time when I was an atheist, believing that all religion was just a set of rules to control people, D. Dalton demonstrated through the example of Ghandi that the Love and Truth force can be a powerful vehicle for change. This completely changed my view point from victim to activist. One could actually have spirituality from within, instead of imposed upon him or her from without. A tool, not a punishment. The 'truth' one has seems to be irrelevant; it is one's passion and belief and willingness to stand behind that Truth that triumphs. If it is True in the archetypal sense, others will join (not follow) you. And by direct action at the heart level, you can touch and change nations. This is not about passive resistance; this is about direct non-violent confrontation. It is about appealing to the best, the highest nature, of that which you confront. He showed me that one can change the world with one's heart; that truth can win. And now I just wait for Dennis to write the definative book on Emma Goldman... Concise, thoughtful analysis of Gandhi's ideas.

What a brilliant analysis of Gandhi's philosophy! This is an insightful collection of essays that illuminates the essential relationship between Gandhi's theory of non-violence and his practice of the same. Dennis Dalton uses two powerful examples: the Salt March of 1930 and the fast to end Partition-related violence in 1947. There is a fascinating conclusion between Gandhi's ideas and those of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, illustrating the relevance of Gandhi's thought to present day issues.

Solid Scholarship

Dennis Dalton has an extraordinary piece of scholarship here on Gandhi. It might be better suited for Gandhi experts, or at least those who have read a bit about Gandhi. This is not a biography. If you want that begin with Louis Fischer books on Gandhi. Dalton does contribute an exceptional analysis of Gandhi's nonviolent program, his commitment to "swaraj" or home rule, and all his political interests. Dalton also critiques and understands well the strength and limitations of nonviolence. This book is ideal for those interested in religion and politics, who preferably have at least some biographical knowledge of Gandhi. For example, having read the Fischer books, or Gandhi's "Autobiography" and his book "Hind Swaraj" would put you in a prime position to grasp Dalton's very fine work. Overall highly recommended for the hard core Gandhi enthusiast or scholar. Dalton's book concludes with an illuminating comparison and contrast of King, Malcolm X and Gandhi.

interesting as a historical document

This is an abridged reprint of the 1723 edition of Filippo Bonanni's "Gabinetto Armonico," with 152 engravings by Arnold van Westerhout. There are 7 pages of introduction with a list of engravings, 19 pages for the index and a catalog of titles by Dover publishing (presumably outdated), and 305 pages of the book itself.

This is essentially a visual catalog of musical instruments and other noisemakers of antiquity, from ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome, India, Persia, and North Africa to medieval Europe. The basic format is one page of text (about a paragraph on average) and one 4.5" x 6.5" engraving per instrument. All the original artwork is here, but nearly none of the original text. Instead, the editors have condensed the original writings into "captions" that provide basic information about the purpose, usage, history and sound of the instruments, and often, corrections to Bonanni's text.

Many different instrument types are included. Horns, strings, organs, and percussion instruments of many varieties are accompanied by a sizeable selection of non musical noise makers, such as hunting horns, bird whistles, voice amplifiers, and military and religious ceremonial instruments.

The engravings are more informative than artistic. Almost every image is a full body portrait of a player with an instrument set against a nondescript outdoor background. As much attention, if not more, is given to the player and his/her clothes as the actual instruments. None of the images are particularly frame worthy, but all are clear and reproduced very well in this printing.

There are some problems worth mentioning. One is that the editors' captions make it clear that the original work should not be read as a reliable historical document. Many entries are noted as being inaccurate, if not entirely imagined. Another problem is that Bonanni's world view was apparently as antiquated as his subject matter (not entirely unexpected for a work of the early 18th century). The captions and engravings occasionally allude to the author's fantasies of exotic, naked simpletons dancing by the fire with their crude yet amusing whirlywoos. Of the maraca, Bonanni writes that it was used by "savages who know no better instrument." I assume that overt racism played some part in Dover's decision not to use the original text or to print another edition of the book thus far. This is unfortunate, as the book has significant historical value and deserves a proper reissue.

This isn't a scientific or comprehensive work (unfortunately it lacks a bibliography). It's a historical record, albeit with the biases they often entail. There is some interesting music history here that's unlikely to be found in the average history book. This book should appeal to art, music and history aficionados, and would make a good companion piece to the Getty Museum's "Music in Art" from their excellent Guide to Imagery series.

This latest offering in the publisher's series of atlases on East Central Europe provides a systematic and comprehensive treatment of Europe west of the former Soviet Union, east of Germany, and south of the Baltics down into western Turkey. Also included are eastern Germany, northeastern Italy (Venice), and historic Poland-Lithuania (today's Belarus, Lithuania, and parts of Ukraine). In a progression of 89 full-color maps, the essentially chronological presentation of ever-shifting boundaries extends from the fifth century to 1993. This rich compendium of the geography and history of the region also treats economic patterns, the growth of the city, ecclesiastical jurisdictions, and industrial development. Author Magosci ( Ukraine: A Historical Atlas, Univ. of Toronto Pr., 1985) has included maps showing the districts and counties of every country in the region after World Wars I and II. Such a work is especially valuable today in view of all the upheaval that has occurred in Eastern Europe since the fall of communism in 1989. Finished maps were not seen by this reviewer, but sample maps were appropriately detailed, very readable, and highly attractive. You can't get to this once far-removed region by the Chattanooga ChooChoo, but who cares with this wealth of information at your fingertips.

Much in the news recently for radical political and social changes, East Central Europe has known tumult and change for centuries. The stasis the Cold War brought to borders and political systems was an uncharacteristic period of calm. This atlas, the keystone volume in an ongoing 10-volume scholarly history of the region, charts and summarizes changes from the fifth century through 1992.

For the purposes of this atlas, the limits of East Central Europe have been defined as "toward the west, the eastern part of Germany (historic Mecklenburg, Brandenburg, Prussia, Saxony, and Lusatia), Bavaria, Austria, and northeastern Italy (historic Venetia), and toward the east, the lands of historic Poland-Lithuania (present-day Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine up to the Dnieper River), Moldova, and western Anatolia in Turkey." Nothing is simple in this region, including place-names. As postwar treaties have moved borders back and forth, and as kingdoms, empires, and republics have risen and fallen, place-names have changed depending upon which group held power at a given time. The editors have settled on the principle of using the same name for a town or city on every map regardless of usage at the time depicted on the map or latter-day revisionist desires. The name used is based on present-day political boundaries. This is supplemented by providing "in parentheses below the main entry, as many alternate historical names as space would allow."

The 89 color maps are arranged in chronological order. Scales vary, but most maps show East Central Europe whole or a substantial portion of it. Legends appropriate to each map are clearly labeled, as are the maps themselves. Substantial interpretive text--a full page or more--accompanies each map. The text enjoys the same clarity as the map it explains. Useful tables (e.g., dates various states declared war on each other from 1914 to 1917, the ethnolinguistic-national composition of Yugoslavia) are imbedded in the text. In addition to showing the state of the entire region at key points in its history, the maps depict religious trends, wars, migrations, population levels, economic developments, and individual countries. Sources for each map are listed in an appendix. They are cited by a section letter and author's name, which refer to items in the extensive four-part bibliography that follows.

All of this information is accessible through a detailed table of contents and a thorough index that cites places, peoples, events, and topics and differentiates between references to text and maps. Bracketed abbreviations follow many place-names in the index to indicate which of 26 languages they derive from.

No comparable source in English exists. Adams's Atlas of Russian and East European History (Praeger, 1966) focuses on Russia. Furthermore, it necessarily misses recent developments, and its black-and-white maps are rudimentary in comparison. The Historical Atlas of East Central Europe is, of course, indispensable in libraries that have been collecting the other volumes in the History of East Central Europe series, and it will be a worthy addition to other libraries, especially since interest in this volatile region has expanded well beyond academe.

Excellent history of Central Europe/Balkans with 50 maps

This cartographic history of Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans is essential for anyone attempting to understand the current crisis in Kosovo. Author Paul Robert Magocsi gives concise histories of the major ethnic groups, and their kingdoms, principalities, and national states occupying the territories between the German- and Italian-speaking peoples on the west and the political borders of Russia on the east. The book gives extensive treatment to the Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, Romanians, Yugoslav peoples, Albanians, Bulgarians, and Greeks, others, including the Baltic peoples (Finns, Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians) are discussed, as are the Belorussians and Ukranians. While these histories are necessarily abbreviated to short summaries of principal events, the overall effect is one of cohesion that gives readers a clear picture of the historical forces at work. My sole criticism is that the text sometimes repeats itself. On the other hand, the maps and their accompanying text tell volumes about political and social conditions there. Additionally, 32 statistical tables give comparative data on ethnolinguistic and national compositions of the populations of those countries. This atlas gives exactly what it promises: The history of the lands between the German and Italian-speaking peoples in the West and the boundaries of the former Soviet Union in the East - in short: "East Central Europe". Not to be mistaken with "Eastern Europe", which can exactly be defined by the European area of the former Soviet Union, or Russia, Belorussia and Ukraine of today.
Beside East Central Europe, the atlas also covers the Balkans.
This is the best English-language atlas of it's kind at the moment.
Balanced history telling, which tries to present both sides of disputed topics, illustrated by beautiful - although sometimes rough - maps.
This work presents the finest of Anglo-Saxon mapmaking.
To be used together with the series "A History of East Central Europe", and to be compared with the "The Times Atlas of European History".

The best historical atlas for genealogy in the region

From the Baltic to the Balkans and from 400 A.D. to 1992 A.D., this atlas colorfully covers the territory in the best possible way.
Researchers with Slavic, Germanic, Jewish, Greek or other ancestry from east central Europe will find this historical atlas invaluable.
It contains 89 wonderful maps which show useful details such as the Catholic diocese and archdiocese as they appeared in 1900, the tremendous populations movements from 1944 to 1948, Jewish settlement, and of course the ethnic composition of the region at various periods. Each map comes one or more pages of explanatory text as well.
I find this atlas to be a constant help in my struggle to understand the changing borders of the region throughout history. You can't understand family history if you don't have an understanding of the history of the family's place of origins. This atlas is an ideal way to better understand the history of east central Europe.

Different, Endearing and Beautiful

Oh lucky me. For those familiar with my reviews, you must be thinking: he’s losing his mind, all those five-star reviews, one after another. But no, I’ve just gotten lucky. The last few books I’ve read were special, each unique in its own way, and that’s extraordinary in a genre that often relies on formula instead of imagination.

At first glance, “Thirty Things” might strike you as just another formula book – the gay road trip. I’ve read more than a few of those. But, as always, first glances can be deceiving. This is a lovely journey, lovingly and beautifully written, a great experience for the characters, an even more rewarding one for the lucky reader.

Nate and Finn are roommates, best friends, and companions since they were both eight years old. Finn is gay and out, Nate appears to be relentlessly straight (if his regular conquests are any indication). Finn, however, is still a virgin. He has a problem, a major impediment to a rich and fulfilling sex life – he’s been in love with Nate since he was thirteen years old, and no other man stacks up to him.

Finn has been extraordinarily careful in hiding his attraction and passion for Nate. He’s just about to turn 30, and he’s become so used to living an unrequited love that he can’t even consider other possibilities. He’s also deathly afraid that Nate will find out, because it might destroy the incredibly close friendship the two have shared for most of their lives. His other great fear is Nate falling in love with one of the girls he beds. A serious relationship would not only make Finn a fifth wheel, but Nate would, inevitably, move out and move along. Finn isn’t sure he could bear that.

For the last two weeks, Nate has been secretive, which is totally out of character. The two men always share everything. Finally, Finn demands to know what’s going on, and Nate relents. He’s been putting together Finn’s birthday gift – a road trip across the country with a list of 30 things to do before turning thirty. He’s accumulated a bucket list of all the things he knows that Finn always wanted to do, but never found the time or the confidence to tackle. Oh yes, Finn has a bit of a disability. When they were kids, Finn fell out of a tree in Nate’s yard and got run over by a car as he dropped out of the sky right in front of a hapless driver who couldn’t avoid him. The accident crushed his pelvis and part of his legs. He’s undergone years of therapy, but he still walks with a limp and has trouble remaining standing when he’s fatigued or he’s overexerted himself. Nate is always there to catch him, encouraging his independence, but watching his back to make sure he’s OK. That’s one of the reasons that Finn works from the small house he shares with Nate. He loves his work as a book editor, and can do it from anywhere. No need to commute to an office or wend his way through a cubicle farm.

As luck would have it, Nate is a published author. He too works from home. They are a matched pair except, of course, in the romance department.

The birthday road trip is scheduled to last a month, and at each stop, Nate gives Finn an envelope containing the “dare” for the day. Some of them are just lovely events, like horseback riding, sleeping in a tree house (at a lovely resort built 25 feet above the ground), watching a meteor shower, attending his first rock concert or taking his first trip to Disneyland.

Others are real challenges to help Finn face down his fears, such as bungee-jumping over a thousand-foot gorge in Colorado or touring the Portland coast in a glass-bottomed helicopter. Finn accepts all the challenges because of his absolute trust in Nate, and gets to experience so many things that he might never have had the courage or ambition to try, were he to try them alone.

That constitutes the bulk of the book. It is truly a travelogue, with lush descriptions of some of the most beautiful and quirkiest places in America, plus glimpses of the evolving relationship between the two men.

About a third of the way through the trip, the inevitable happens: Nate cuddles up with Finn in bed, and later plants the most passionate but tender kiss on him. It rocks Finn’s world. He’s sure he’s dreaming, but doesn’t want to wake up. This is all he ever wanted his whole life, and the reality is infinitely better than his dreams

Of course, into even the loveliest lives, a little angst must fall, and the cause of it is Finn’s confusion. It sure feels like Nate loves him. But just a couple of weeks ago, Nate was straight. Is this just a “vacation fling”, or a “pity thing”, or just some elaborate “experiment”? He is haunted by the possibility that the day this road trip ends, Nate goes back to dating girls and Finn will have to find a way to live with a shattered heart.

Fortunately for us, he’s wrong. He should have trusted Nate. It’s one of those old “communication” issues wherein both men had passionate feelings for each other, but neither would mention it in fear of killing their perfect friendship.

I won’t give it away, but trust me, there is a happily-ever-after to be had in “Thirty Things”, and you’ll probably guess it before Nate gets to the last envelope at the last stop.

That doesn’t matter. Like the road trip, the pleasure of “Thirty Things” is in the journey, not the goal. And with a writer as adept as Cate Ashwood, getting there isn’t half the fun, it’s most of it. Her brilliant descriptions evoke vivid and memorable settings. Her dialogue is both credible and charming. The men are both so endearing - without a hint of malice or self-absorption - that you’ll love them both from the very first page. You’ll root for these authentic, sincere, talented men. You’ll share their love. You’ll cheer for them at every stop along the way. And, don’t worry; this road trip is not exactly chaste. As it turns out, Ms. Ashwood is also really good at writing hot (but tasteful and romantic) sex. To be honest, there’s nothing I could find in “Thirty Things” that she didn’t do well.

If you want to read a sincere, beautifully-written and beautiful book, this is the one to read. Ms. Ashwood is an amazingly gifted writer. Kudos.

This was a sweet story, but not particularly interesting or engaging

This was a sweet story, but not particularly interesting or engaging. I found myself skimming a lot, which at the price is unfortunate. The cliche "show don't tell" comes to mind - the main character Finn's narration was basically just a list of what they do on their road trip and it was pretty boring. I didn't really feel chemistry between the characters, who also felt one-dimensional. We were told they were best friends and then in love, but I didn't really feel it. The plot itself was boring, as the only conflict is Finn questioning Nate's feelings, which isn't particularly engaging because the reader isn't really given any reason to doubt the HEA. In fact, you can pretty much see where it's going from halfway through the book. I was also disappointed in how little dialogue was dedicated between the characters discussing Nate's sexuality. These best best friends - guys, did you know they're best friends? the author is going to tell you again every other page just in case - are almost 30, and yet Nate's never hinted at being anything other than straight to his gay best friend? Nate just says he's been "gay or bi" forever and thinking about Finn romantically for "a long time" but they never really have an actual conversation that tells that story. To me that's the more interesting, even romantic, part - or would have been. How did Nate begin to develop romantic and sexual feelings for his friend? How did he first feel about it, how did his feelings change over time? How did that change his vision for himself? The book can be narrated by Finn and still expose these aspects of Nate's development. Especially considering how insecure Finn feels about it, and that there is no other conflict to occupy the author, you'd think there would be more weight to the storyline. Finn's disability was also poorly researched and executed - there wasn't really consistency in how he was impacted by various activities, not a lot of backstory around how his daily life was impacted by constant pain management other than that he had pain to manage...it's hard to explain, but the author was telling us he had a disability, it was mentioned a lot, but I just couldn't really picture it. Like how does Finn walk? Does he have a constant limp or is it more just an uneven gait? How does his movement change as he tires or is in more pain? Just another "show don't tell" moment, I think. All in all, it wasn't a bad read. There were some interesting parts to the road trip and Ashwood did a good job describing their various adventures. Ultimately I wouldn't buy it again, I wish I'd read it through Kindle Unlimited instead.

For years Nate and Finn, of 'Thirty Things' by Cate Ashwood, have behaved as a couple, just without the sex. They've always taken care of each other. They live together, share household responsibilities, meals, almost everything is done with the other in mind, particularly in Nate's case. He's tried his best to make things easier for Finn whether it be buying a low truck so Finn will have easy access, to giving him a piggy back ride when he gets too tired to walk. It's obvious that they truly love each other, just not in the way they both wish they could. Thank goodness Nate decides to change that.

There are many things Nate and Finn have talked about but haven't done, and Nate decides it's high time they tried them. He plans an elaborate road trip with several stops and activities around the country and writes a list of thirty things to do before they turn thirty; some are simple and others are complicated, but all are amazing. Nate puts each in a separate envelope for Finn to open, one each day. Finn is overwhelmed by Nate's generosity and can't wait to get started. Some things on the list are really enjoyable, like gambling in Las Vegas; and others, like bungee jumping, terrify Finn, but even with that, he trusts Nate so implicitly that he goes along with whatever Nate has planned with little argument.

As if the trip weren't magical enough, Finn's biggest surprise is when Nate kisses him; really kisses him. Instead of being happy, Finn is totally befuddled He starts speculating on what the kiss means and becomes anxious and a bit paranoid. Is Nate joking? Does he really share Finn's feelings? Since when is Nate gay? Is this just happening during the trip? What happens when they get back home? As has been Finn's pattern for their whole life when it comes to his feelings for Nate, he can't bring himself to talk to Nate about his fears and concerns. He buries them like he always has, leaving Nate to speculate on what's wrong. As much as Finn wants to believe that what he's dreamed of for years is finally happening, it's hard for him to let go and enjoy it. When Finn finally tells Nate how he's feeling, Nate tries even harder to prove he's sincere.

Reading this endearing friends-to-lovers story is like visiting a comfortable place where I could feel safe and happy. It's a down-to-earth experience rather than a great challenge necessitating a lot of deep thinking. There's very little angst. The trip involves lots of wonderful scenery; with exotic, frightening, challenging, and simply touching parts. Nate and Finn fit together so well that it made my heart hurt, but in a good way, giving me that warm and fuzzy feeling that a book this special often does. If you are a hopeless romantic like me, you may love this story. Thanks, Cate, for the lovely story and informative journey.
