A challenge for every business.

I found every line of this book a challenge when related to current concepts of business.
Not only did this book explain the concerns business people have with competing, but gave us new insights into why these factors exist, and what real time solutions can be applied. The challenge is that the more one considers the implications, the more one realises that new business skills and attributes will need to be applied.

Excellent work.
This book is simply the Sun Tzu, Macchiavelli or Clausewitz of business strategy. Any company or organisation in competition with another can benefit hugely from the framework laid out in this book.
I am really looking forward to new works from D'Aveni.

Unreadable

This book was once thought to be the new rival to Michael Porter's books. Porter talked about sustainable competitive advantage and D'Aveni countered that nothing is really sustainable. I don't have any problem with the gist of the argument, but the book is largely unreadable for another reason. It is an orgy of charts and tables and confusing terminology. The author doesn't really try to build on exiting work. He wants to reinvent everything. When the book was written in the mid-90s, management consultants' fancy charts and diagram were in their zenith. So the author tries to awe the reader and runs with it as far as possible. The result is largely unreadable. I would say four stars for actual content and one for style. The book is now 15 years old, so it is not worth more than two stars.

Finally a character with stability.

I read this and the other S.E. Hinton staple books ("The Outsiders," "That Was Then, This is Now," and "Rumble Fish") repeatably as a teenager. This is one of the few Hinton books that will not seem as dated as others, as it is set in more of a country setting rather than city.

Of all of Hinton's protagonists, Tex is by far the most innocent and sweet, even referred to as Bambi by another character. More remarkably, Tex comes out of this book retaining that sweetness while coming to terms with a less than innocent discovery. Simply put, he a good boy repeatedly in the wrong time at the wrong place. He loves his horse and resents it bitterly when his older brother is forced to sell it in order for them to survive. They have an absentee father riding the rodeo circuit, and Tex's older brother has been forced to give up a basketball scholarship to attend to Tex's upbringing. As the book continues, his brother becomes increasingly frustrated and even violent, moreso than circumstances would call for. It is only when their father returns home, resulting in an argument between father and older brother, that a haunting secret comes out, causing Tex to run away.

Per his character, he runs to the wrong place at the wrong time, the city and an old friend of his brother who has built a life dealing drugs. The already upset Tex unwittingly arrives at a drug-deal gone bad, getting shot in the process. The shooting ironically causes a healing for his family, and an acceptance of the truth. The whole family learns to look past it and move on, growing.

The book Tex, by S. H. Hinton, is an interesting book about a teenage boy whose life is full of complication. He is easy going, careless, and believes everything would be perfect if his brother would stop complaining about their father. Throughout the book, Tex and his older brother Mason face many obstacles and problems. Many of the two brothers' problems are due to the absence and influence of their father. He has been gone for over five months. His brother, Mason, takes care of Tex, and serves as the authority figure and role model of the home while their father is gone. Tex loves his brother very much, but does not understand why he wants to leave.
Throughout the story, S. E. Hinton does an extraordinary job of making his audience feel exactly what the characters in the story are. As the characters go through the story they feel many different things. Some of these feelings include love, hate, and lots of confusion. He does an interesting job of helping the readers to understand what is going on inside the mind of the fifteen-year-old. He moves each character through the story in such a way that it makes the reader not want to put down the book. The story is filled with much emotion as Tex and his brother face their many problems.
Tex's problems begin as soon as his brother sells his horse. Then, only after a hitchhiker kidnaps them, do the brothers begin to really pull together. This life threatening ordeal brings them closer to each other. Along with an interesting storyline, S. E. Hinton does a wonderful job of helping the reader to understand what is going on. With many twists and turns, the storyline becomes clear and the book becomes more intriguing to read.
This is a great book for young readers who do not want to read a lengthy book, but one that delivers much feeling and emotion.

In this book, there is a kid named Texas, and he is fifteen. At the beginning of the story, everything is going his way. Later it all started to go downhill; everything went wrong. Texas and his older brother Mason were running out of money. Things just keep getting worse.

I really liked this book. There was lots of action throughout the whole book. I got really confused a few times in the book, and I would have to go back and reread the part a few times so that I knew what was going on. I think that it takes a few chapters to get into the story so if you're like that, don't give up on it. Trust me, the book gets really good. After the first couple of chapters, I just couldn't put it down! I recommend this book to anybody that likes to read.

KJV single-column perfection

I've always had an appreciation for a good bible and not until lately has format been at the top of my list in priority. Since I was little I've had a fascination about the word of God, but knew very little about it or how to read it. After coming from little to no reading of the bible to reading just the King James Bible to expanding that to ESV, NIV and NASB; I've realized one thing in the process - the formatting is key to understanding context clearly. I always felt when I read a KJV that the text seemed so interrupted and choppy. Then I decided to pick up another version (my favorite is the ESV) and see how they read. I was amazed at the way they read and how the text flowed. The paragraph setting made it much easier to comprehend. I was frustrated because every KJV had verse by verse formatting and given the somewhat archaic words in the KJV the text was made that much harder to understand. I love the King James Bible and the rich heritage that comes with it. I know that it doesn't use the most up to date manuscripts and some passages can be a little bit confusing, but the language at which the text is presented has a wonderful ring to it. Not to mention that our former brothers gave their lives so that we could read the bible in English. If you ever get a chance to do a little digging into how the KJV was made please do so. It'll give you a new appreciation for the King James Bible.

As for the New Cambridge Paragraph Bible, I think it is executed very well. Like I said above, the perfect size and formatting is something I've been waiting for. I was ecstatic to receive my ESV clarion a few weeks ago and was planning to get the KJV clarion as well, but saw this rendition by David Norton and that they were coming out with a personal size (perfect for me!). I cannot tell you how great this bible is. I think I may like it as much as my ESV clarion (if you own a clarion you know that's a big statement). I never thought I would like a hardcover this much. You really do feel like you are reading a book and the size feels right in your hands. Exactly the way I want to experience the King James Bible. The size is actually perfect, not too big or too small. I would say the text block is very similar to the clarion, yet, the print experiences slightly less ghosting than the clarion (to be honest - pretty close to the same). If you want to save money and experience the KJV like never before, I would get one of these today! For me I couldn't justify spending another $120 on a bible so I thought I was settling for a KJ version format that was similar to the clarion. I can tell you that this is not settling ... this may end of being one of my go to bibles for daily reading! Seriously, pick one of these bibles up ... you will experience the beauty of the KJV like never before!

Great publication!

Firstly, it came as described, so good on you, shipper.
Secondly, it's a great edition. I love the hardback volume more than the paperback, personally, and the style of its format is great. I love the King James translation, and the way David Norton has formatted this is perfect. The paragraphs help in reading for extended periods (I never liked verse by verse) and the Psalms and Proverbs are formatted as poetry. Beautiful. I just love it.

Love it! Great hardcover KJV

Love it! Great hardcover to stand-up on your book shelf. The pages feel great, not thin, not too thick. It's a great font. I'm in-love with single column settings now, and this one is perfect.

I really like how the footnotes are set to the side of the text, and to the inside (and there are no section headings) so that the body of the text is nicely placed away from the"gutter" or seam/middle of the book. Of course, if this is a Bible you want to take notes in, that's a problem because it would be impossible to write much of anything right there in the gutter. But for me, the KJV is a cross-reference reader for me with an ESV as my main reader and note-taking Bible.

There are no cross-references, and I prefer that. I don't like a bunch of references distracting my reading and taking-up space on the page.

I like a soft cover Bible as my main reader, to hold in my hand, but for an alternate translation Bible that will sit on my shelf, I wanted a hardback. So this Bible checks all the boxes of what I was looking for; KJV, single column, no cross references, hard cover, sewn binding. It's a very nice Bible and I just might get it custom rebound with a nice leather covered hard cover. Lord willing, this will be the KJV I go to on my shelf for the rest of my life.

A Good Sequel - Well Thought Out and Executed

Just when I thought Stroud had outdone himself with the Bartimaeus series, especially books 3 and 4, here comes a great new series from him - Lockwood & Co. After The Screaming Staircase, The Whispering Skull doesn't disappoint. Thrills, chills, turns and twists galore.
We meet the steadily more famous Lockwood team, each showing the familiarity, as well as steady character development over the previous book, and through the current book. Intertwining the whispering skull from the last book with an intricate plot in this book, alongwith the co-opetition with Fittes Agency, and also DEPRAC, it makes a strong, cohesive plotline - never once boring or losing track.
All in all, a worth recommend to all lovers of fantasy - and looking forward to the next part of the series!

Fast-paced, Creepy, Brilliant! (even if you're an adult!)

Have you ever walked into a bookstore and bought a book you’ve never heard of by an author you’ve never come across, purely on the strength of a recommendation from the staff? That’s how I came across the first Lockwood & Co. book (The Screaming Staircase) – and I am so glad I did. I LOVED it so was over the moon to be sent the second instalment to review.

Imagine a cross between a teenage, modern day London-based Ghostbusters (without the cheese) and Harry Potter and you’ll have a vague idea of just how great these books are. They are marketed as YA but are just as much fun for adults.

The three main characters – Lockwood, Lucy and George make up the Lockwood ‘Ghost busting’ Agency. They provide a familiar (in a Harry Potter-esque way) dynamic which is full of humour and completely works. I like them all, from the dashing, ‘never breaks a sweat’ Anthony Lockwood, to the completely kickass, gutsy Lucy Carlyle (who I suspect fancies Lockwood just a little) to the rather unattractive but studious, clever and ever curious George Cubbins. They all have their strengths – both psychic and otherwise. Lockwood’s strength is Sight – he can see ghostly disturbances and manifestations before the other two. Lucy’s ‘Talent’ is in detecting aural phenomena and George specialises in the research of cases; trawling through dusty old manuscripts, visiting old libraries and archives as well as doing a considerable amount of tea-making and baking.

In the first book we followed Lucy through a series of interviews until she was ultimately hired by Lockwood and the three of them got into (and out of) all sorts of trouble. In this instalment, a year on and the three of them still live in Lockwood’s big old family home (not an adult in sight), getting into (and out of) all sorts of trouble.

In this world, only children and teenagers are sensitive enough to psychic phenomena to deal with ‘The Problem’ (the ‘ghostly epidemic that besets us’) and so are hired by agencies in order to find, and eradicate the source of their power. All of this is (supposedly) regulated by DEPRAC (Department of Psychical Research and Control), which is based at Scotland Yard and which I think of as the Lockwood version of a kind of Ministry of Magic.

This time around, the trouble involves a ‘whispering skull’ (in a jar, which communicates with scathing sarcasm and seriously winds up Lucy), lots of catacomb / churchyard / coffin based action, deadly artefacts that have been stolen and need to be found, lost manuscripts written in dead languages and of course, a fair smattering of pretty terrifying ghosts and spectres. There are rapiers, magnesium flares and salt bombs; spiders, rats and desiccated corpses. What’s not to like?

The story is creepy, fast paced and full of action - it absolutely gallops along with the action nicely interspersed with brief homely scenes usually involving copious amounts of tea, sandwiches and cake (baked by George of course).

Further intrigue (as well as lots of humour) is created by the presence of rival agency members – mainly those of the original, (in)famous Fittes Agency, ‘where psychic detection had been raised to an art-form’, particularly Quill Kipps (who we met in the first book). As Lucy tells us: 'Being diplomatic, I’d say Kipps was a slightly built young man in his early twenties, with close-cut reddish hair and a narrow, freckled face. Being undiplomatic (but more precise), I’d say he’s a pint-sized, pug-nosed, carrot-topped inadequate with a chip the size of Big Ben on his weedy shoulder. A sneer on legs. A malevolent buffoon. He’s too old to be any good with ghosts, but that doesn’t stop him wearing the blingiest rapier you’ll ever see, weighed down to the pommel with cheap paste jewels. Anyway, where was I? Kipps. He loathes Lockwood & Co. big time’.

I loved it just as much as the first book. The ending is brilliantly satisfying and sets things up wonderfully for Lockwood #3…

CD should be used as a pronunciation guide

I bought this phrase book & CD because I am going on a trip to Norway and wanted to learn enough Norwegian to be able to get around without hardship. I was hoping that the CD would teach the language from the beginner's level. The format of the CD is as follows- the phrase is spoken once in English, then once slowly in Norwegian, then once quickly in Norwegian. Then it moves on to the next word. The CD should be used more as a pronunciation guide rather than as a tool for learning the basics.

You will not need this book for your cruise to Norway

The Norwegians speak excellent English. Do not bother to buy this book unless you are actually learning the language. I did not need it for my cruise to various ports in Norway. The Rough Guide to Norway will help you to find information about the services, culture, history, and food of Norway.
