About the Author

Cameron Cole (MA, Wake Forest University) serves as director of youth ministries at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Alabama, and is the chairman of Rooted, a ministry dedicated to fostering gospel-centered student ministry.

Jon Nielson (MDiv, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) serves as ministry director for Christian Union at Princeton University. Previously, he served as the college pastor at College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and as the director of training for the Charles Simeon Trust. He and his wife, Jeanne, have three daughters.

This book is very well written and structured, and it provides a wealth of information for anyone wanting to work or volunteer in youth ministry. The book is structured so that you can tailor it to your specific needs, although the entire book is a good resource for anyone wanting to learn more about or do more with their youth ministry. A unique feature is that each topic is written by a different author knowledgeable about the subject matter, totaling 14 in all.

The book is broken into three parts:

Part 1 - Foundations for a Gospel-Centered Youth Ministry
Begins with the basis for developing a successful youth ministry, making sure That the Gospel of Jesus is at the center of all you do. Other topics include the importance of discipleship, expository preaching, building trusting relationships and community with each other, building a foundation with parents, and bridging the generational gap.

Part 2 - Practical Applications for a Gospel-Centered Youth Ministry
Topics include small group bible study, leadership training, music and worship, and retreats/events.

Part 3 - The Fruit of a Gospel-Centered Youth Ministry
This last section deals with evangelism, serving the poor, and international short-term mission trips.

It is stated in the text that this book champions the Gospel as the core of effective youth ministry. It argues that the message and reality of Christ's victory over sin and death should permeate every single facet of ministry to young people. It is no secret that there is a high dropout rate for church attendance among youth who graduate and move out of the youth ministry. While there are many contributing factors, research has shown that one factor has appeared more influential: the composite theology of youth ministry. Christian Smith coined the term moralistic therapeutic deism, which boils down to inculcating a moralistic approach to life. It teaches that central to living a good and happy life is being a good moral person. The Gospel, however, proclaims what God has done for sinners above the moral performance for sinners. The Gospel offers an inspiring call to live for God's Kingdom, as opposed to living a shallow life focused on self-affirmation and self-centeredness. The Gospel speaks of a God who is more than a fallback plan; He is a sovereign, living Lord actively involved with His people. The focus on the importance of the Gospel is what is missing from so many youth programs today. This book guides you to get back to the bedrock foundation in your ministry. Youth ministry seeking lasting change must flow out of the theology of the cross. The focus should be on enriching the people in your program as well as building a strong foundational program. Teenagers need a total overhaul of their belief systems. Today they are exposed to many different accepted beliefs and behaviors, more than ever before. Society is in a tail spin and our youth are getting lost in the chaos. One key to change is engaging and involving parents as much as possible in your ministry. If a parent views their spiritual duty as being fulfilled by simply bringing their children to church, Christian formation will not happen at home. Lukewarm parents will produce lukewarm kids. Parents need to be invited and encouraged to participate in youth activities and to attend worship services. Youth ministry should serve as a bridge to connect students and parents to each other and to the church. But there will not be a bridge unless the ministry is properly equipping students to develop deep roots in their church.

This book is primarily written for youth pastors and/or volunteers who work in youth ministry. I would encourage anyone who helps with youth ministry or anyone who is interested in learning more or becoming more involved to read this book. There are few books that are geared for this kind of topic. The most notable and most popular is the “Purpose Driven Youth Ministry” by Doug Fields which really sets the bar of what an effective and practical guide in youth ministry. Fields mostly sets the program (complete with diagrams, templates, graphs) which is comprehensive. He shared some biblical insights here and there. But in “Gospel-Centred Youth Ministry”, having the gospel in the very heart of this kind of ministry IS practical.

To tell you honesty I have no idea who are the editors and contributors except for Elizabeth Elliot and the Collin Hansen (who wrote the foreword). However, that didn’t deter me to check this book out. Unlike other how to books with one author in every topic, Gospel-Centered Youth Ministry” the contributors provides their forte in every phase of the youth ministry. Sharing biblical insights, personal experiences and practical tips every entry bring reinforcement to youth workers who needs help for this ministry. The book is divided into three sections: foundations of an effective ministry, four practical elements of the ministry and students role in reaching out the world.

Gospel-Centered Youth Ministry: Practical Guide is must read for youth workers, pastors and lay people. This book is the real deal. It delivers a gospel saturated message that is not full of gimmicks or quick fix.

About the Author

John A. Hannah Professor of Geography, Michigan State University
An undergraduate course in physical geography was Harm de Blij's eye-opener. As a graduate student, he conducted field research in the Swaziland (Africa) Lowveld, working on the hypothesis that this 120-kilometer-long, steep-sided valley might be a southern spur of the great East African rift valley system (PhD, Northwestern University). Since then he has addressed topics ranging from continental drift to climate change and from heat summation in viticulture to rogue waves in oceans. His more than thirty books include technical, text, and trade titles and have been translated into Chinese, Russian, Italian, and other languages. In the media he vigorously promotes geography as indispensable to education, decision-making, and domestic and foreign policy formulation.

Peter O. Muller
Professor of Geography and Regional Studies, University of Miami
Peter O. Muller's many works include The World Today: Concepts and Regions in Geography, Sixth Edition (2012); Geography: Realms, Regions, and Concepts, Fifteenth Edition (2011); and Economic Geography, Third Edition (1998). Great information for geography classes, but very dry.

Typical, run of the mill geography textbook here. Very few visuals and long, drawn-out text. Don't get me wrong, there is a ton of good information in this book, however the chapters are long, text-intensive and really dry. Not the best geography book I have had to use, but far from the worst.

Good geography start

This book is a great start for beginners in physical geography. I got it for my introductory Geography class for non-majors. It's very straightforward for someone not majoring in the sciences. It bolds certain vocabulary words to help you out. There is also an index of vocabulary words in the back. The one thing I don't understand is why it is so expensive, but that could just be me.

Confusing

I agree with the below reviewer. The author is clearly intelligent; however, this book is written in a confusing fashion for beginners, even for the seemingly simplest of concepts (i.e. probability). The random interjections of graphs before concepts are fully explained makes for a very disjointed experience. I find myself turning to Google and random examples on the internet for elucidation, at which point the concepts seem much less intimidating/complicated than as presented in the book. After I solidly understand the concepts, the book description then makes much more sense! It's just not that initially accessible to beginners (as would be implied by the description "basic" in the title). A good reference, though.

Satyajit Ray (1921-1992) revolutionized Indian film and is widely considered to be one of the great filmmakers of all time. In this work, Ganguly (U. of Colorado) examines Ray's negotiations with history and modernity in the six major films he made between 1955 and 1970: Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Apur Sansar, Charulata, Aranyer Din Ratri, and Pratidwandi. Overall, Ganguly sets himself the task of examining how Ray's films convey the filmmaker's belief that the modern is best understood as a total experience in relation to how people express themselves in a changing society, although more specific concerns such as Ray's preoccupation with subjectivity in contexts such as education, urban culture, and the management of grief; the nature of action in a society suspended between apathy and revolution; and writing as a form of female discourse frequently intrude. Literature IS evil.

Bataille conducts a review of several authors with relation to evil, and whether or not all of literature could potentially be evil or just certain authors. He has wry, cogent remarks such as "Her short life was only moderately unhappy." Bataille writes to the part of the brain that is emotional, as well as the analytical, and is all the much better for that - but if you expect philosophy to be dry as dust, you'll wonder how he could be called a philosopher instead of the literary equivalent of a panderer.

Georges Battaille throws down a challange to Jean-Paul Sartre, who held that "literature is inncocent". Bataille, in his examination of such figures as Emily Bronte, Sade, Baudelaire, Genet, Kafka and Michelet, and the component of "evil" in their works, argues that literature is, in fact, "guilty" and that, moreover, it must acknowledge itself as such. In his reading of these literary figures, Bataille proceeds to analyse literature's complicity with evil and how this enables it reach a fuller level of communication. Drawing on Freud, he "eroticises" literary creativity and contends that the notion of "Art for art's sake", which emerges as a reaction to a fragmented and reified social world dominated by utilitarianism and commodity fetishism, is actually a subterfuge, literature masquerading as innocent under the mantle of "pure art", in order to rechannel the forces that are dammed up owing to the repressions imposed by culture. Though elliptical and opaque, this book is a challenging and fascinating study, which has a potential for laying the foundations for a philosophy of composition that underwrites the aesthetic of evil and explores its relation to the overarching forces of institutional and administrative surveillance.

The Death Drive in literature

In this short (and at times very difficult) collection of essays, Bataille challenges Sartre's view that "literature is innocent". A selective survey of key writers - including Bronte, Genet and Sade - shows that literature is a necessary antidote to the overarching Superego and Capitalism's emphasis on the Reality Principle. In this way, Bataille shows that literture is in fact evil, in that it is anti-utilitiarian and thus embedded in the childish Pleasure Principle. While Bataille seems to alternate between ascribing the driving force of literature to both the Life Drive (Eros) and the Death Drive (Thanatos), he does succeed in showing how Freud - although he never explicitely invokes the name - can be used for a new method of reading literature.

Excellent edition of an excellent work.

Writing in the 1790s, Schiller united the rigorous epistemology of Kant and Fichte with Plato's dynamic account of the development of the soul to produce one of the most beautiful works of philosophy in the European tradition. The Letters on Aesthetic Education offer an interpretation of the development of the individual and the parallel development of Western civilization. These interpretations focus on the conditions that allow for mental health in a human individual and society, and especially demonstrate (as the title indicates) the crucial role of artistic experience in healthy human development. This is a great work, and a great introduction to the other German philosophers of the 19th Century (Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, et al). This edition is very good: the translation is good, and it has a facing German text. Highly recommended.

Classic of aesthetics written by a great poet

Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy addressing beauty, taste, art and the sublime. After studying what philosophers have to say on this topic, it is refreshing to read the philosophical reflections on aesthetics by Friedrich Schiller (1769-1805), a man who was not only a first-rate thinker but a great poet and playwright. And Schiller tells us he is drawing his ideas from his life rather than from books and is pleading the cause of beauty before his very own heart that perceives beauty and exercises beauty's power.

Writing at the end of the 18th century, Schiller reflects on the bitter disappointment of the aftermath of the French Revolution where an entire society degenerated into violence. What can be done? As a true romantic, he sees beauty and art coming the rescue.

Schiller writes how idealized human nature and character development is a harmonizing and balancing of polarities - on one side we have the rational, that is, contemplative thought, intelligence and moral constraint and on the other side we have the sensual, feeling, physical reality. Lacking this balance, harmony and character, Schiller perceives widespread disaster for both lower and higher social classes, that is, people of the lower classes living crude, coarse, lawless, brutal lives and people of the higher, civilized classes are even more repugnant, living lethargic, slothful, passive lives. Not a pretty picture, to say the least.

We might think scientists or hard working business people might stand a better chance at achieving balance, harmony and character. Sorry; the news is not good here either. Schiller writes, "But the predominance of the analytical faculty must necessarily deprive the fancy of its strength and its fire, and a restricted sphere of objects must diminish its wealth. Hence the abstract thinker very often has a cold heart, since he analyzes the impressions which really affect the soul only as a whole; the man of business has very often a narrow heart, because imagination, confined within the monotonous circle of his profession, cannot expand to unfamiliar modes of representation."

So, what must be done to restore a population's needed balance, harmony and character? Again, for Schiller, beauty and art to the rescue. One key idea in making beauty and art a central component of people's lives is what he terms `the play drive'. Schiller writes: "Man plays only when he is in the full sense of the word a man, and he is only wholly man when he is playing" By play, Schiller doesn't mean frivolous games, like a mindless game of cards; rather, play for Schiller is about a spontaneous and creative interaction with the world.

To flesh out Schiller's meaning of play, let's look at a couple of examples. In the morning you consult your auto manual to fix a problem with the engine and then in the afternoon you examine a legal document to prepare to do battle in court. Since in both cases you are reading for a specific practical purpose or goal, according to Schiller, you are not at play. In the evening you read a Shakespeare play. You enjoy the beauty of the language and gain penetrating insights into human nature. Since your reading is not bound to any practical aim, you are free to let your imagination take flight and explore all the creative dimensions of the literary work. According to Schiller, you are `at play' and by such playing in the fields of art and beauty, you are free.

And where does such play and spontaneous creativity ultimately lead? Schiller's philosophy is not art-for-art's sake, but art for the sake of morality and freedom and truth. If Schiller could wave a magic wand, everybody in society would receive an education in beauty by way of art, literature and music. And such education would ultimately nurture a population of men and women with highly developed aesthetic and moral sensibilities who could experience the full breathe and depth of what it means to be alive. Or, to put it another way, with a restored balance, harmony and character, people would no longer be slaves to the little world of their gut or the restricted world of their head, but would open their hearts and directly experience the fullness of life. And experiencing the fullness of life, for Schiller, is true freedom.

How realistic is Schiller's educational program as a way of transforming society? Perhaps being realistic is not exactly the issue. After all, Frederick Schiller was an idealist. He desired to see a society of men and women appreciating art and beauty and having their aesthetic appreciation color everyday behavior, so much so that their dealings and activity in the world would serve as a model of noble, moral conduct for all ages. Not a bad vision.

Friedrich Schiller composed in a series of 'letters' a profound, stimulating and important reflection on the relevance of our aesthetic experience. He was influenced by his contemporary Immanuel Kant and goes on to explore the implications that emerge from our understanding of the sublime in relation to culture, society and our own edification. His short and erudite expositions reflect his response to the tumultuous times that existed at the end of the 18th Century. His 'letters' are insightful of a man who wants his readers to make a difference to the ennoblement of life rather than descend to the easy pursuit of the superficialities that are just as obvious in our lives today.

Jan Van de Velde dit "l’Ancien", né à Anvers en 1568, décédé à Haarlem en 1623, a été un maître-écrivain néerlandais, et demeure aujourd’hui l’un des plus grands calligraphes occidentaux ayant jamais vécu. Il est aussi le père du dessinateur et graveur néerlandais Jan Van de Velde dit "le Jeune" (1593-1641), et de Willem Van de Velde dit l’Ancien (1611-1693), peintre et dessinateur néerlandais, lui-même le père du célèbre peintre de marine Willem Van de Velde (1633-1707) dit "le Jeune".
