Make your life and leadership stand out from the crowd
By Craig T. Owens
Ordinary. Plain. Generic. Non-descript. Boring. According to Richard S. Lytle in Abandon The Ordinary, these words should never be the descriptors for those who want to create a distinctive brand of leadership for their business, family, or church. And they should never, ever be used to describe Christians.

Dr. Lytle is a business professor, so he comes at this topic from a distinctly business paradigm. But make no mistake: this is not a dry academic treatise. Abandon The Ordinary is an exciting and practical way to develop a distinct, unique brand for your life. In the opening chapter, Dr. Lytle quotes -

"To make ordinary that which God calls life and use your gifts and capacities for nothing is to prostitute great potential. Jesus Christ came into the world to convict us not so much of our transgressions but of our possibilities and to deliver us from an empty way of life. ...God must become ill at times when He sees us so trivial, so paltry, thinking such little things, when such great and honorable and glorious things are there in front of us." - Jim McGuiggan

This is such a refreshing viewpoint for so many people who have bought-in to the "cookie cutter" mentality that says every business should operate like this, or every family should look this way, or every Christian must behave like such-and-such.

To help aide the reader in developing a distinctive, far-from-the-ordinary brand, Dr. Lytle has included several worksheets at the back of the book, which will help you apply the methods about which he teaches. I'm looking forward to utilizing this helpful tool.

If you're tired of ordinary, Abandon The Ordinary will be a welcomed book for your library.

Kara knows that the show already has a big-time celebrity lined up for the co-host, but she doesn't know who it is.

Chad Beacon quickly rose to fame after winning America's Next Star, but he doesn't want his entire career to be about singing. There is so much more he wants to do - like act. The new variety show sounds like the perfect next step for him, but his parents want him to have a co-star who shares his faith since they'll be spending so much time together.

Acting is high on Kara's priority list. But a relationship with God? Not so much. But God is after Kara's heart and He's put people in her life who are showing her there's far more to Christianity than rules and judgment.

And just when it seems that Kara's going to have to give up her acting dream, God reveals that she may have a starring role after all - in a story so big only He could write it.

Must Read!!
By Josie Ann
Kara McKormick wants to be a star! She's a seventeen-year-old girl who is known for being a contestant on "The Book of Love" which you can read about in Krista's first novel, "First Date". In this novel, Kara tries out for a variety show, "Teens Rock". Unbeknownst to the ten girls who are competing against each other, they must impress their housemother, Flora. When "America's Next Star", Chad Beacon, decides to take on acting, his parents demand his co-star be a Christian, Flora, their assistant, poses as the girls' housemother. This was such an amazing book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! There was more to this novel than the average "follow your dreams"; the story had a clear, Christian message, and I loved that Krista wasn't afraid to express Christianity in this novel. I also loved the relationships in this novel: Kara & Addy, Kara & Chad, Chad & Jonathon, and Addy & Jonathon). Despite the fact that this novel was loosely based on the story of Issac and Rebekah in Genesis 24, it wasn't overly relegious; it was still fun, enjoyable, and showcased struggles without jamming one's beliefs down your throat. I love reading a good Christian book every once in awhile, because it relaxes, strengthens, and grounds me; it's a reminder of my faith. I think everyone should read this novel, even if you're not a believer; it puts things in perspective for you!

In the World Starring Me?
By B. Justus
My most recent selection from Book Sneeze is Starring Me, a fictional young adult novel written by Krista McKee. This book is the follow up to First Date, although each is its own unique story. The characters cross over, but Starring Me is its own story.

Kara is a young, hopeful, wanna be actress who is selected to be one of 10 girls to "audition" for a variety show. The exact details of the show, including the costar, are kept secret from the girls trying out.

The exact details revolve around Chad - the latest winner of an American Idol type show who, after only a year, is already tired of the teen heartthrob lifestyle. When he and his parents are pitched the idea for a variety show, they set some ground rules of their own. Chad's parents insist their son's costar must be a Christian, desiring the girl to be uplifting to his spiritual walk.

For me, the book was only meh. The story line didn't contain twists, turns, or anything surprising/exciting. It was a quick read, and I enjoyed the author's writing style. I think its unfair of me to expect a novel for teens
to be as complex as others I read, but I found the predictability a bit tired.

This book could be a great spring board, however, for the "in the world but not of the world discussion." Should we surround ourselves with Christians lest we be tempted to stray? I don't agree with the position taken by the parents (and presumably the author) but is certainly a topic worth talking about.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255: "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

Must Read!
By Jen | Jenuine Cupcakes
Thank you to Thomas Nelson for sending me this e-galley through their Book Sneeze program. Starring Me is a fun, refreshing read about a girl as feisty as her red hair, a cute boy and the chance of a lifetime. This story is loosely based on the biblical story of Issac and Rebekah and is a companion novel to McGee's debut, First Date, (where we first meet Kara).

Kara McCormick was born to perform and while she didn't win the boy on The Book of Love, she came away with an even better prize in her new best friend Addy. The girls have a lot in common but the one thing they don't share is Addy's belief in God. Kara doesn't see the need for Him in her life even though she's seen Him work in Addy's. All that changes when Kara gets the chance to audition for a new teen sketch comedy show, convinced it's her ticket to making her dreams come true. When things don't go as smoothly as she expected, she'll discover that God works in our lives whether we acknowledge Him or not. Kara also gets a lesson about what's really important and the meaning of real love - the kind that's all consuming and never ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kara! She's straightforward, selfless and laugh-out-loud funny. She shows integrity and an openness to what Addy and several others have to say. There's a sweetness to the friendship she develops with Chad and parents of younger readers have nothing to worry about. The idea of courtship; not dating until you're serious about finding a lifelong partner is addressed with Kara and Addy discussing the pros and cons of bouncing from one relationship to the next.

Krista McGee is one of the few Christian authors I've found who is able to share a message of love, forgiveness and grace without sounding preachy or cheesy. McGee's characters are believable and relateable. I'm a Christian and I don't enjoy reading stories where everything is over the top or with characters who are too "perfect".

There's also a Q&A in the back for small groups or book club discussions.

Jakk's Journey, by Thomas Sulcer

Jakk’s Journey is a coming-of-age story about a high school boy who builds a spaceship, flies toward Betelgeuse, and has adventures. He befriends aliens, grapples with sex and love and curious robots, dabbles in the supernatural, queries the mysterious and powerful God program, and battles evil forces hellbent on planetary destruction. Why is he being tailpiped around the galaxy by Sheela, his beguiling yet snarky female classmate? What started things, anyway: was it his suspension, a squirrel falling from a tree, the abandoned tablet, a science competition gone awry, or Sheela’s fateful volleyball dive? How can Jakk find love? Can aliens teach him how to become a human?

A Coming of Age Story; Think Kurt Vonnegut Meets Mark Twain
By AmazonUser
This book is a wonderful variation on the standard coming of age story; think Kurt Vonnegut meets Mark Twain.
Jakk is a young man who is disaffected and ignored in his hometown, only to flourish when transported to the wild and rollicking larger galaxy of neurotic aliens and out-of-this world technology. He finally finds his place in the cosmos only to return home a changed man -- one who is strangely compelling to the young woman he pined for but who never previously noticed him -- not to mention the reaction he gets from her Mom.
The author does an especially terrific job in the way he creates wonderful asides about the theory of relativity; the nature of relationships between the genders; and man's place in this life. I found those portions of the novel to be my favorite, though I must say that all of it was entertaining and highly imaginative.
Did I hear anyone say sequel? Hope so.

Fun and wise and adventure
By Amazon Customer
Jakk's Journey By Tom Sulcer is an extraordinary piece that fits between worlds - both literally and literaturely. The story moves into outerspace by the end of the first chapter. But the style shares elements with sexy comical novels, fantasy, adventure, popular philosophy, science fiction, and romance. While I am often put off by stylistic diletantism, Sulcer manages to dive into a style, poke a little fun at it, revel in it, and then blithely run off to another world. Rather than finding this short of shift a burden and momentum killer, i found it kept the story and commentary on the story interesting and compelling, so much so, that I read the last 200 pages in one sitting staying up until 3:45 AM.

Instead of being just a fantastical outer space journey, Jakk is on a mission that he is unaware of. Oh he thinks he sort of knows what he is doing trapsing around intergalactically, but his real search is to discover what makes a human humane. His important discoveries, like our own, are mostly accidental and nearly subliminal. He is hopelessly lost in teenage boy horniness and the dichotomy of insecurity and superiority. We can't help but recognize and laugh at ourselves as we revel in his conscious adventures while his unconscious quest grows more apparent to us.

"Jakk's Journey" is our journey. Our roads will vary greatly from Jakk's, particularly those of women readers, but the windows into boyishness and even a little girlishness, on the way to humaneness - are part of the views this adventure offers as unexpected rewards.

illuminated and bewildering as what being inside a teenaged boy’s mind might actually be like.
By Janet Zhun
Jakk’s Journey was unlike any book that I’ve ever read—a dizzying journey through the headspace of a teenager who’s determined to see the world on his own terms. After solving string theory and faster-than-light travel, Jakk travels to an alien world that’s as unpredictable and bizarre as the one in his own mind. This book explores obsessions with sex, egotism, and the need for sincere emotional connection as if it were racing through a darkened room of funhouse mirrors with a flashlight: an experience that’s as intense, multifaceted, illuminated and bewildering as what being inside a teenaged boy’s mind might actually be like.

William Blake on Self and Soul, by Laura Quinney

It has been clear from the beginning that William Blake was both a political radical and a radical psychologist. In William Blake on Self and Soul, Laura Quinney uses her sensitive, surprising readings of the poet to reveal his innovative ideas about the experience of subjectivity. Blake’s central topic, Quinney shows us, is a contemporary one: the discomfiture of being a self or subject. The greater the insecurity of the “I” Blake believed, the more it tries to swell into a false but mighty “Selfhood.” And the larger the Selfhood bulks, the lonelier it grows. But why is that so? How is the illusion of “Selfhood” created? What damage does it do? How can one break its hold? These questions lead Blake to some of his most original thinking. Quinney contends that Blake’s hostility toward empiricism and Enlightenment philosophy is based on a penetrating psychological critique: Blake demonstrates that the demystifying science of empiricism deepens the self’s incoherence to itself. Though Blake formulates a therapy for the bewilderment of the self, as he goes on he perceives greater and greater obstacles to the remaking of subjectivity. By showing us this progression, Quinney shows us a Blake for our time.

Review
Quinney powerfully rereads both Blake's early work and his later visionary poems as an unfolding record of the embattled psyche. This extremely important contribution to our understanding of Blake should appeal not just to Blakeans but to all who think about the psychology of transcendence. (Paul Fry, Yale University)

Much of William Blake's most extraordinary work depends on his concept of 'Selfhood.' Laura Quinney has gone beyond all previous attempts to deal with Blake's treatment of what it means to be a solitary consciousness. Quinney illuminates Blake's very original relationship to the Gnostic heresy and his astonishing vision of what might redeem our humanity without falling into received doctrines. (Harold Bloom)

Quinney's readings of Blake's works, from Thel to Jerusalem, offer much insight, particularly when she engages with the debates of Blake's time. (Shirley Dent Times Literary Supplement 2010-07-02)

Important subject marred by academese
By Bohdan Hodiak
I remember as a student reading Blake, and though I didn’t really understand him, I felt in my guts that Blake was on to something very, very important. He could see that the brave new world that was developing around him was on its way to conquer the earth while losing its soul. And we were in the same boat, discarding religion and stepping out into the abyss. That may be why interest in Blake has exploded in the past half century, among a select group of people. The number of books published on Blake since then can fill a large bookcase. Google his name and you will see the interest.
But Blake has always been a problem for those who really want to study his thinking. He lived in dangerous, intolerant times and had to write some of his long poems in a kind of code. For generations the prophetic books were looked on as incomprehensible. But then came Northrop Frye and his superb book "Fearful Symmetry" and then Foster Damon and his invaluable “A Blake Dictionary” and the gates finally opened.
Now there is Laura Quinney and her “Blake on the Soul and Self.” She could not have picked a better topic for this is the essence of Blake. He not only tried to show the sickness and self-division of modern educated man but a way out of the trap. Quinney does a fine job of explaining the chief prophetic books and her writing is clear. But she seems to aim her book at fellow academics. So you will meet such words as alterity, aleatory, aporia, apodosis. When she mentioned a “collapse of agency” it took me a moment to figure out she meant something to do with active, generative. There are more elegant ways to say “our species dwells alone in sunderance” or “the linear temporality of the natural world.” That’s just a sample. As I neared the end of a couple of the chapters I felt like a school boy impatiently waiting for the 3:00 p.m. bell to ring. Still, Quinney’s topic is important and helped me understand better such phrases as Divine Imagination and Mental Fight. If you are getting ready to read the prophetic books , or have read them, this is an excellent help.
A bit of nit picking. Quinney calls Blake an atheist. No. He is not a theist or a pantheist but he certainly believed in a higher power and was deeply spiritual. You can discard Nobodaddy and still believe in God. Quinney also says “contact with nature is detrimental to the soul.” It is in nature that I first felt my intimation of transcendence. Also, “consciousness has no place in nature.” Well, without consciousness I couldn’t experience nature. Animals have consciousness, even though they can’t say I am I. I know, these are particular definitions with their own special meanings but that could be made clearer.

In many ways Blake really saw into the depths of our souls and came close to the truth about life and its meaning. Compared to Blake people like Sigmund Freud were half blind. But it is sad to me that he could not make his understanding more practical, at least a bit of the time. Here was a man propagating an active, dynamic, heroic spirituality. He saw himself as a Creator with a capital C, with the power of God in him. Yet there were days when he and his wife went hungry for lack of money. When he died he was taken to a pauper’s field and thrown into a pit, followed soon by two other bodies on top of his. Could he not have used his Divine Imagination to earn a bit more money? There is nothing wrong with giving the devil his due as long as you keep your soul. Anyway, I’m glad I read this book. I gave it three stars because this review is aimed at the average Blake lover, not the aspiring Ph.D. I would give Frye’s and Damon’s books five stars.

An authoritative book written by master teachers
By R. M. Pruzek
As a long-time professor of statistics with experience teaching introductory statistics to hundreds of students over many years, using many textbooks, I want to go on record that this is a wonderful book. The authors are hugely prepared, both as far as the statistical concepts and methods are concerned, but also with respect to instruction. They have learned what to do, and what not to do; they have made difficult concepts as simple as is they can (remembering Einstein's great principle: every explanation should be as simple as possible, but not simpler). All the key concepts and methods that really need to be covered are here, and the book is tied to the real world by repeated references to meaningful applied problems. For years I despaired that I would never find a book that had the great qualities I wanted to see in a book that introduces statistics, but this book comes as close as any I have seen. You won't go wrong using this book to learn statistics, nor to teach it!

(Almost) Math-less Stats
By eileen
This is a well-organized, nicely put-together textbook, with lots of step-by-step examples to give you a good base of understanding and lots of problems and section reviews to allow you to apply and extend that understanding. If you're intimidated by math, this textbook will go a long way toward easing your fears, and if you're a lover of math, you'll learn a lot about Statistics and be highly entertained along the way.
Although an introductory calculus class was a prerequisite for the course I took using this text, the only time integrals and complicated formulas showed up was in footnotes or the occasional homework problem. In general, the book aims to teach through real world examples and applications, not through pages of potentially intimidating to-be-memorized equations and formulas. As a result, the "math" parts of the book (you can't really do Statistics without math) are hidden, so that you are often using "math" without realizing it.
I especially liked the book's listing of instructions, for a variety of Statistics software packages, about how to do on the computer whatever you'd just learnt in a chapter. There are some "do by hand" problems, but just as many "use the computer" problems--helpful, given that any time most of us will be using Statistics again will be for a job or for research and will involve computer software.
There are all sorts of random facts that break up the practically inevitable "ugh" feeling of reading a textbook. In addition, the writing is very clear and informal, without lots of technical jargon (what little there is is clearly explained first--no wondering in Chapter 15 what that darned "r," which you've been seeing since Chapter 6, means). When reading, I always felt the authors were talking to me through the page, which made reading go faster and more pleasantly. (The short chapters help, too.)
I also found the "What can go wrong?" sections at the end of each chapter useful, especially when we got to interpreting data: several times, I would try to do a homework problem, then go back to the chapter and realize I'd made a beginner's mistake and done exactly what I wasn't supposed to do. The authors know what first-time Statistics students are thinking, and they do a good job of steering you along the right course.

Read my comment.
By Anthony James Hayes
The ad for this book is correct. This is the book that is required for my stats 211 class at my college. Unfortunately I realized this book does not include the ONLINE CODE for the online assignments. My college book store sells this book for $180 with the online code and I thought I got a deal buying this from Amazon thinking the code was included. The ad says nothing about the online code. If it doesn't say anything about an online code, that means it's NOT included (lesson learned...). If you need the online code, get it directly from the website your college instructor give you. You will save money and get an ebook with a little more for your money. If you don't need the code, Amazon offers a great price for the textbook.
