He received his PhD from Vanderbilt University and was a Fellow in Medical Psychology at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. He received his undergraduate degree from Eckerd College, where he learned about the value of primary sources and the need to integrate information from a number of perspectives. As part of his clinical training, he has worked in a number of mental hospitals and clinics across the country, where he developed an appreciation of the experiences of those with mental disorders. In his career, he has served as a visiting professor and researcher at the University of Hawaii, Münster University, University of Rome, Tübingen University, and Konstanz University. At Penn State, he is currently the Director of the SCAN (Specialization in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience) program and was previously the Director of the Clinical Psychology Program. His research has focused on approaching clinical questions from a neuroscience perspective. He has used psychophysiological and brain imaging techniques such as EEG, MEG, DTI, and fMRI to study emotionality, psychopathology, and individual differences. These studies can be found in numerous articles, book chapters, and books. His work has been published in such journals as Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Neuroscience, Psychophysiology, Physiological Reviews, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Cognitive Brain Research, Biological Psychology, NeuroImage, and Clinical Neurophysiology. This work has been funded by both national and international agencies including NIH, NIMH, NASA, NATO, and the DAAD. In addition to research, teaching has been an important part of his career. His textbooks include Methods Toward a Psychology of Behavior and Experience, Psychophysiological Methods (with Robert Stern & Karen Quigley), and Evolutionary Psychology: Neuroscience Perspectives Concerning Human Behavior and Experience.

Perfect explanation of functional style of programming

The functional programming is a hot topic these days as it can potentially be the effective response to necessity of adopting software to multicore hardware architecture. In effect, the elements of functional programming have been successively introduced into all mainstream languages, most of which gained these features quite long time ago. Java had lacked these facilities until the version 8 was released. Fortunately, that version catches it up and brings this language back to the family of modern languages.
This book explains very clearly and profoundly all functional elements introduced into Java. What is the most important, the author always tries to confront the functional approach with the traditional, imperative style of programming. As a result, the reader gains the clear comparison between these two different styles of programming.
The author of this book is the additional factor assuring reader satisfaction. Venkat Subramaniam is the recognized and experienced expert in the domain of programming languages without whom hardly any reputable conference about Java can be held. If his perfect teaching skills and sense of humour are also taken into account, further encouraging to reading this book seems unnecessary.
Finally, I must admit that the community of software developers have just been enriched by the next valuable book. If you want to catch on the main sense of functional approach and get benefits from its declarative style and better scalability, you must definitely read this book.

Excellent guide for experienced Java developers

This is an excellent book for experienced Java developers who want to learn the new functional programming (FP) aspects of Java 8. Highly recommended.

Throughout the book, Venkat shows how to implement simple examples that are easy to wrap your head around using the old imperative style of Java, and then rewrites the examples using FP. That approach is very effective and accomplishes two things:

1. Having both imperative and FP implementations of the same examples make it much easier to understand the FP implementations because experienced Java developers can relate FP to the way they're used to writing code. Without the imperative versions, I don't think the FP versions would be nearly as clear to experienced Java developers without a FP background.

2. The differences between the imperative and FP versions of the code are striking. The FP versions are shorter, simpler, and once you are comfortable with the FP constructs, easier to understand. And by avoiding mutable objects, you don't have to deal with trying to get your code to work properly in a multi-threaded environment - something that is nearly impossible with imperative Java.

The main difference between imperative and FP is that with the former, you specify how you want to do things, whereas with FP, you specify only what you want to do, leaving the details to FP constructs such as the map() function. Venkat's approach makes that difference abundantly clear.

If you're new to Java, then this is probably not the book for you. However, if you've been writing imperative Java code for a while, I can't imagine a better way to learn the functional aspects of Java 8.

Finally, it's important to realize that Java 8 adds FP on top of imperative Java, which reminds me of the way C++ added OOP on top of C. As a result, some of the FP aspects of Java 8 are not as simple as in functional languages built with FP from the ground up, such as Clojure. Java 8 does not have first class functions, for example, so things like the Functional interface are a bit convoluted. Venkat does a fine job of guiding you through those rough spots, however.

Disclaimer: Venkat is a friend that I've known for a long time.

Basic introduction to functional programming for the traditional Java OO programmer

Venkat is an electric, hilarious, and knowledgable public speaker which prompted my purchase of this book. I was disappointed as it is very introductory. If you've followed any of his Scala talks or know the basics of functional programming, this book doesn't offer more content. The book is probably targeting complete functional newbies, and that is fine, but I was disappointed. I would still recommend his unique and creative presentations on YouTube or live if you can.

Engagingly written but I had some problems with the characters

He can see the pressure coming already. His distributor has multiple ugly daughters and Travis King is a highly eligible bachelor. But Travis spots a way out--if he's already married, already has a wife, the pressure is off. With childhood friend Julie O'Hara handy, why not arrange a quick marriage of convenience, with the understanding that she'll go away in a year once the distribution agreement is done. Travis can certainly afford the money to pay her off. What he can't afford is a wife he doesn't love.

Julie O'Hara has learned the lessons of love. Her first husband dumped her and she's struggling to save enough to pursue her dream--opening a bakery. Travis promises enough money to make that easy, and he's not demanding sex--not that sex with Travis would be any hardship. Still, something about the whole deal feels wrong. When push comes to shove, though, Julie will do whatever she can for Travis--she's always had a soft spot in her heart for him. But when it turns out her first marriage was never officially divorced and her ex-husband/first husband starts blackmailing her second, a marriage of convenience based on friendship and shared needs looks likely to blow up.

Author Maureen Child brings sensual detail, the marriage of convenience fantasy, a super-wealthy hero, and capable writing to a couple of characters who just didn't work for me. Travis's motivation for seeking the marriage of convenience seemed weak--how about just saying no? Julie's motivation for agreeing was even weaker. But the real problem comes when the evil Frenchman (and first husband) Jean Claude Douchette starts his blackmail program. As Travis recognizes, Julie is already scheduled to do very well out of a short term marriage of convenience. Her motivation to bring in Jean Claude seems impossible. Moreover, once the news of Julie's bigamy comes out, Jean Claude's blackmail opportunities vanish--but Travis continues to hold suspicious thoughts toward Julie. Even harder to swallow is Julie's decision to meet with Jean Claude. Considering all she had to say was 'don't blackmail us any more,' and considering that she already knows photographers are following her, meeting up with Jean Claude seems to fall into the too-stupid-to-live classification.

Maureen Child puts down some pretty good prose. It's a shame these characters don't really live up to it.

It was exactly what I expected from silhouette desire book. Quick easy ready with a happy ending and the issues resolved. I can't wait to read the next one.

I didn't hate or love this book. Travis was so paranoid and Julie was so naive. The book focused on Travis mistrusting Julie and assuming she was out to get him. I just wanted to say, "give it a rest, Travis. Enough already."
