Creole Voodoo, a unique blend of African, Haitian, Native American, Catholic, spiritualist, and European folk magic traditions, welcomes the uninitiated. Inside are complete instructions for creating altars for each of the Seven African Powers, including how to petition the orishas, as well as some practical spells. This guide is written for people who are not initiated into any specific Voodoo tradition, but would like to benefit from knowing how to serve the African spirits. The author, born and raised in the Voodoo rich culture of New Orleans, has written this book from the perspective of Creole Voodoo, for which there are no formal initiation rites. This is the revised edition, and contains twice the information as the first edition. Plus, there is an extra chapter on Working Magick with the Seven African Powers and an additional 12 spells and rituals. This book is richly illustrated by the author, who is well-known for her unique conjure art style, and whose art has been celebrated in several books and on National Geographic's Taboo.

who is writing these other reviews for this author???
By Kalfu
This is the second book a friend has recommended to me - after showing complete contempt for another one of the author's books, a friend though I might like this little compendium. Reading through the book and looking at the reviews, I fail to see "decades of practical experience in age-old authentic Voodoo rituals" as the reviewer below states. However, it certainly shows that what ever this author writes - be it this book or another - is clearly HER take on it. I seriously wonder who is writing these other reviews for this author?!
Years ago everybody wanted to be a root-worker. Then people realised that you can't collect an initiation title in Hoodoo and Rootwork and everybody wanted to initiate in Haitian Vodou. But after people discovered that it is expensive, everybody wanted to be part of New Orleans Vodou - because its free and you can do what ever you want - or so people think!
Looking at the books Denise Alvarado has published, it appears she has taken a very similar journey - she mixes Hoodoo, Rootwork, Haitian Vodou and New Orleans Vodou as she pleases, presenting none of these traditions as they are! Hoodoo is a real tradition, New Orleans Vodou is a real tradition. What both of these traditions have in common is an understanding of underlying principles rather then set formulas. Sadly, Denise Alvarado knows nothing about any of these things! She shows zero understanding of the underlying principles and no knowledge of authentic formulas. Its yet again a sad attempt to mislead less knowledgeable readers! This book appears quickly thrown together to quickly publish to quickly make a couple of bucks. It looks as if Denise Alvarado only publishes to promote her various product-selling websites. Having now read and reviewed two of the author's books, I will definitely not waste money on a third, neither would I want to buy any of her products - they could be just as badly made and as low quality as her writing! Very poor!

So happy I got this book
By L. L. S
Like I said in the title above, I am so happy I got this book. I want to get all of her books. I just finished making some necklace using the numbers associated with the 7 African Powers. I like the layout of this book with an organized listing of information on all the 7 African Powers. If you are a solitary learner/practitioner, this is a good book for you. Enjoy.

Disrespecting all the cultures mashed together in ignorance of the authors own greed....not a religion
By bamboo grove
Ok there is no such thing as creole voudou, its new orleans voudou or from one of the caribbean islands, its initiatory, voudou does not use orisha nor does it use exu thats brazilian quimbanda
What the author has done who is not initiated in any voudou nor any other tradition to my knowledge is mash several cultures together disrespecting all on a surface level containing misinformation.
I agree with the other 1 star reviews... the 7 african powers are dead guides often mistaken to be orisha. They are dead humans not served nor revered...Orisha are not in voudou generally.... thats santeria ocha lucumi ifa religions.
So much bad information out there by people wanting to make a quick buck or trying to cut corners:
Espiritismo tradition:
It is also interesting to note that the image of the seven Catholic saints put together in that manner, along with the proliferation of magical supplies dedicated to the Seven African Powers didn’t really come about until the 1970’s and 80’s corresponding with an influx of Latinos into the United States especially from Puerto Rico after a referendum in 1951 officially made Puerto Rico a commonwealth of the U.S. The second generation of Puerto Rican kids was born in the 70’s and 80’s and many of them were born and raised in New York amid the Espiritismo tradition’s influences.
The Seven African Powers Are Spirit Guides Not Orishas
A historical drawing of an Abakuá Ñáñigo
The Seven African Powers are actually spirits of the dead from the seven different African tribes that were brought to Cuba and forced into slavery. Within a Santeria (Lucumi/Lukumi) cosmological understanding, the Seven African Powers are araorún (citizens of heaven – dead spirits) – they are not usually Egun (ancestors of blood or initiatory lineage). When a person speaks of the Seven African Powers they refer to a group of 7 different spirits, one from each of the following tribes: Yoruba, Congo, Takua, Kissi, Calabari, Arará, and Mandika. A person who has a connection with the Seven African Powers will have one spirit guide from each of these tribes unique to him, and one of the seven will dominate the group and orchestrate their efforts. This is an interesting cultural reflection of the history of Cuba where these seven formerly hostile tribes were forced to live and work together to survive.
Within the diloggun oracle’s corpus of information, the Seven African Powers are heavily referenced in the odu Edigbere (7-8). Interestingly, this odu also speaks about the importance of the drum as a tool to call down the Orishas and it also speaks about the power of Congolese magic within the religion of Palo Monte. If a person were to receive the odu 7-8 in a diloggun reading it would indicate that they have the Seven African Powers in their court of spirit guides and it would be up to them to use Spiritualism (Espiritismo) to determine who they are, what their names are and who is the primary one that heads the seven.
